After selecting a tool, I am unable to unselect the tool. The menu item is greyed out. The keystroke sequence "Ctrl +Shift+A" does not work.

I understand that GIMP always has a tool selected by default. However, the 2 attached images illustrate my issue.

Select none is to remove a selection not to deselect a tool. You simply switch to the tool you want to use.

vitforlinux Your English is far superior to my Italian. You have communicated well and provided valuable insights to this new user.

Erisian, thank you for your concise and correct answer.

To the Board Moderator from Australia (I read and appreciated your rapid and erudite response explaining my confusion about the "Select" Menu item not pertaining to tools. I read your thoughtful response on my portable device but wished to use my Windows machine to thank you. I don't understand why, but I can no longer find your answer on Gimp Help.

I am delighted to have now subscribed to gimpchat.com to enjoy responsive and authoritative answers to my enjoyable use of GIMP.

Using a Google search can lead to misinformation, as the image shows.

Yeah,
but g**gle is really only re-chewing stuff from a site called "javatpoint".
And how can they know that those people have no idea about the GIMP?

@ AnasaziDan - thanks for comments about my 'helpful response' ... glad you got to read it.

But I am really embarrassed now because I was up very early today (before 05.00 actually), I logged on and went to edit my earlier response with some more info. But I deleted it instead .... :gaah ..... must have still been somewhat sleepy and/or was not concentrating.

Hi oldmangrumpy,

Thank you so much for clarifying why I could not find your post. You absolutely nailed down that I had the confusion that you analyzed. I am 83 years old and often must create explanations for deleting something unintentionally. I can definitely empathize with waking up before dawn.

I am a retired archaeologist. "Anasazi" is a Navajo word that means "the ancient ones" in widespread usage. A more true translation by a Navajo who would be looking at ancient cliff dwellings in the American Southwest is "Anasazi = the enemies of our ancestors."

Once again, thank you for your authoritative and excellent analysis of my issue.

Stay well and happy,

Dan
