I don't think I want to remove a layer. I just want the animated mask off my image, so I can see it clearly.

I've searched for an answer, but keep being pointed toward removing layers from my images.

You can also turn layers OFF by clicking on the eyeball.

There is a right click menu function of the layers panel/dock,
that will allow you to disable the layer mask.
Right click the layer mask and select Disable layer Mask.

Note: The layer mask can be enabled again later by unchecking it.

Is the "animated mask" the crawling-ants that mark the selection ? and you do not want to see them but want to keep the selection active ?

In the View menu -> Show Selection toggles on and off (default is on)

Of course if you are finished with the selection then as Erisian stated Select _-> None
