www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

Thanks in advance!

Ella - Whilst I am sure there are plenty of other Gimp users out there that can come up with a quick solution for you and warp/transform tools are not my usual area of play, I thought I would quickly try to get the effect you desire as exemplified in the video.

So, I used the 'handle transform tool' to obtain the a lifted corner but then had to play around quite a bit to get a final solution (as below) - I think I need to extend the warp dimensions to make the lift longer and smoother. Anyway I will play some more during the day to get a better understanding of what I can do with the various warp tools and let you know what I come up with. The shadow itself is no problem, blurred or sharp as you wish.

Hi Ella and OMG,

Nice result OMG. Using your tip, here's my try and how I did it.

@ Ella - I played some more with various options:

1. Handle Transform and Cage Transform tools – gets a result but far too much subsequent touch up work required for me, given my lack of familiarity with those tools.
2. Warp Transform tool - using both Teapot's method then my own slightly varied permutation; definitely need a steady wrist on the mouse!!
3. Curve Bend tool – gives a more exaggerated result but may suit your need..

So here are 3 exemplary images from the above research:

1. Warp Transform tool using Teapot's parameters and pixel movement direction.
2. Warp Transform tool using my own settings and direction as follows – size @ 600, then pixel movement direction with the mouse first to the left, then upwards and slightly right to obtain a straight edge on the right of the photo.
3. Curve Bend – I tried adjusting only the Lower settings, but the filter still made unwanted adjustments to the Top. So I set both Top and Bottom filters to the same setting.

Hopefully one of our GC gurus will also come up with a possible solution for you.

The curl didn't have to be as big as in the example, a small lift was enough.
Thanks teapot and OMG :paint

Looking good Ella.

Gave the corner lift another try with a different method:

Part 1 of 2 displace the corner.

Download and install the gradient attached to the next post that I've called 'Corner Lift'.

Start with your original picture layer cropped to content and smaller than the image canvas. I've used a layer filled with a gingham pattern as a test case.

Duplicate the original picture layer and set the layer name to displace map.

With the gradient tool with all default settings, apply the 'Corner Lift' gradient starting at approximately point 1 as shown below and ending at approximately point 2.

The result should look like this:

Attachment:
corner-lift-displace-tutorial-2.jpg
corner-lift-displace-tutorial-2.jpg [ 65.72 KiB | Viewed 431 times ]

Duplicate the original picture layer and set the layer name to displaced corner.

With the displaced corner layer active:
Filters -> Map -> Displace
Aux Input: The displace map layer.
Aux2 Input: The displace map layer.
Abyss policy: None
Horizontal displacement: 75
Vertical displacement: 75
Other settings all default values.

The result should look like this:

This will have distorted the whole picture and we want just the corner so duplicate the original picture layer and place it above the displaced corner layer in the layer stack. Erase the corner to blend it in to the displaced corner. Many ways to do this I just used the erase tool with a large round fuzzy brush, '2. Hardness 025'.

Merge down to the displaced corner layer.

Part 2 in next post ...

Part 2 of 2, add lighting.

Assuming the light is coming from the top left:

Add layer of a dark shadow below the displaced corner.

Optionally make the corner that's sticking up a bit lighter:

Duplicate the displaced corner layer, name it lighter and place at the top of the layer stack.

With the lighter layer active:

Lighten e.g. with
Colours -> Hue Chroma
Increase lightness.

Layer -> Mask -> Add layer mask
Black (full transparency)

Paint on the layer mask with white to show the area that sticks up.

Adjust the layer opacity if wanted.

Result:

Ella, That's a real looking corner and I'm loving your floating island :kpix

OMG, Nice one, thank you I will spend it on more tea :hehe

Made a second corner by flipping the displace map horizontally and displacing a second time with a bit less displacement:

Thank you for your comment, Tas_mania and teapot.
Nicely done, OMG :bigthup

To displace the second corner, I still need a bit of practice, teapot. Good job!

I turned your tutorial into a PDF and a zipped folder with the gradient included.
Maybe @Wallace can post it in the tutorial thread.

I'll attach the folder.

Hi Ella,

I deleted my last post that was commenting on the flipping as it was rubbish, sorry about that.

If flipping the displace map horizontally you need to change the x displacement to a negative value. Summary of displacements to make the corner go "inwards":

Bottom right corner: x positive y positive.
Bottom left corner: x negative, y positive.
Top left corner: x negative, y negative.
Top right corner: x positive, y negative.
