Was that an original photo with the tutorial, or something you did?

I found this one:

http://www.webdesign.org/photoshop/text ... .4960.html

My result using the tutorial:

You can use Lighting Effects in Filters/Light and Shadow/ to do the same thing as you would PS.

And then I found these gems (unfortunately, psdtutsplus is a pay site):

This isn't the same font as yours, but by chance, could you have used the Chrominium script to do it?

File > Create > Logos > Chrominium

That was my own concoction using the dodger font and following some tutorial, which I still can't find. The chrominium logos filter looks the same but this was how to do it "by hand". I will try out both your suggestions when I get home from work...one of them might work just fine, but I still want to find that tutorial so I can stash it away. I think it used curves to get the super shiny look.

Most of the alpha to logo scripts produce a sor of soft blurred chrome effect. I have been experimenting with different methods based on several tutorials to achieve the metallic look. I even created new gradients to get a better gold effect. I have listed a few below but I could'nt find the one that uses an environment map and lighting effects. If chrome is all you want it' basically blur layer of text then a bump layer set to sinusoidal then still using the bump layer, set the gradient to three bars and go to colors>map>map to gradient. Pretty much instant chrome.

I love metal text.

Something along this line?

The top has been curve-adjusted, the bottom, no.

To get this effect I do the following:
1. Add text
2. With text selected, Alpha-to-selection (right click in layers dialog.)
3. Run selection bevel script (layer=normal bevel= inner width=60 depth=40 gloss=10. This will very on the style of font.)
4. With bevel layer selected, run Tom Keil's "Metallic look" in G'mic.
5. Duplicate layer, set mode to multiply.

This gives the darker of my two examples. For the lighter example, on the duplicated layer adjust curve level after setting mode to multiply.

That's one of many ways and it most surely is not the best. But it's quick and easy.

Thanks alc59. That's the one I couldn't remember where to find. Here's another one.

I did that one of penguinpete's a year or so ago. It is a very nice one. I liked the colored one also. He has done some very nice tutorials

Thanks Nix'. I'll give it a try later. I think I like the lighter one better.

Nixnine: I tried 6 ways to Sunday to duplicate your effect, and it never pans out as detailed as yours does. I've used dozens of font types and oodles of bevel settings. I'm guessing there is something in the middle I am missing.

What font are you using in the examples? Maybe I can start from there.

That could also be the Meet The Gimp tutorial on Chrome lettering.

You may have to page down to get to it.

Mahvin, here are my settings on the selection bevel.

I also start with a 3600x2700 canvas. (Sized down after.)

The text I used is called "Venus Rising."

Yes. All adjustments are made on the selection bevel.

Hey Nix' when you say "Selection Bevel script" do you mean bevel2_1.py? If so do you have to install python for this script to work? I have the script but it doesn't show up anywhere that I can find.

Drac, that is correct. Bevel 2.1 but you will need python installed. And it has been ages since I installed python on Windows, but I do remember that you have you have python installed prior to installing Gimp to get it to work. Not to mention there are several other good python scripts for Gimp.
