Grids Grayed out?

GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I have a friend who is trying to use the reference grid in GIMP, but his "show grid" menu item is grayed out. Does anyone know what would cause this?

I just went into Gimp to give a look and the grid option shows for me when I have a layer open. But if not, mine shows gray.

I'm sorry molly, I don't exactly follow what you mean by "layer open." Can you explain a bit?

I think what Molly is saying is that you have to have at least a new image open for the grid to show. Like File > New > Create a New Image. Doesn't matter if it's just a transparent layer of an image.

Check the View menu. If you don't have an image almost all of the options in it are grayed out.

Sorry, yes that was what I was saying. there must be a layer open in order to see the grid in black, not gray
