I'm trying to like 2.8, I really am. Gimp's versatility has been marred by an aspect of the new brush engine, unless I'm mistaken. I really don't want to have to save a whole new dynamic set every time I want a variation on a brush preset. I rely very heavily on being able to tick a box or two for temporary use and then change it back when needed. Is there any way I can do this?

I assume you're talking about brush dynamics.
Simply delete the new one you made when you're finished with it.
Or if you want to keep it for future use just give it a name.
Gerard.

I don't want to have to save a dynamic then delete it every time. I might want to change dynamics two or three times each time I use a brush. Imagine having to do that all the way through a painting!

Simply leave them there and before you close Gimp delete all the ones that are untitled.
They'll be called untitled, untitled#1,untitled#2 and so on.
Gerard.

I've a feeling I'm going to have to stick to 2.6.11. Never mind - thanks. :)

I have one dynamic that I use. I created one and called it adjustable. I just use that single one by making w/e adjustments I need, otherwise I leave it blank.

I use that all the time, once it gives you the option to edit with the matrix, I pinned it with my layers, paths, etc. dock.
Easy dynamics in a complicated system :D
