Play with Filters > Light and Shadow > Xach-Effect. It's great whenever you want to do something low relief or relief.
Rectangular Selection with rounded corners. Fill with gray.Duplicate Layer.
On the top layer make a new Rectangular selection for the button and cut selección. Keep the selection. Duplicate this cropped new layer and rename the top layer to "Top Layer". Apply the Xach-Effect on the second layer. Move "Top layer" to top.
To make the pushed button, follow the same steps but after you cut the selection invert the selection (Select - Invert)
You can add noise or textures to gray. Experience for yourself ... :gimp

Yes, excellent Xach Blurry thing! It adds blur option to Xach-effect.

Sure. :)
1.) Create a new image - 300x300 pixels - white bg
Make a new transparent layer over that.
2) create a new rectangle 215x250 with rounded corners (20)
3) fill the rectangle with a medium gray color. (#777777)
4) With the selection still there ,shrink it down to where you want your transparent window.
About 185x170
Image

5) Now select delete on your keyboard.
6) select>none
7) copy this layer 2 times
8) alpha to select the top layer and color it white (#FFFFFF)
9) select the layer under the top layer and fill with black (#000000)
10) Now comes the tricky part - you need to move the top layer 2 pixels up and to the left
11) select the gray layer and do alpha to selection - select the top layer and click delete.
12) select the black layer - move it up and right 2 pixels.
13) alpha to select the gray layer and select the black layer - delete
14) make the white bg layer transparent so you can see better.
15) arrange layer like so
TOP = gray layer
MIDDLE = black layer
BOTTOM = white layer
BG = transparent

If you want the white bevel to show on a white bg move the white layer to the top and move it to the right and down more.
