Ran across this topic on flicker gimp users, and wondered if there was a way to do this in gimp?
photoshop tut to do glass text

I watched the video and it looks like it could be implemented in gimp. Need to go through it again. We have some talented folks in here that could probably make a gimp tutorial from it.

GnuTux's glass script wouldn't work on something that is not just text, unfortunately.

I've seen some neat stuff, but the glass effect with the reflection like that, is a new one on me! I would love a filter like that. I've seen similar things, but nothing quite the same as that. I guess we could find a way to duplicate the effect, but adding the reflection to the sides of the bump, could be difficult to say the least.

The glass effect script should also work on other objects too, unless I am thinking of a different script.

I bet you could do it, Greg. Just will take some thinking. If a tut could be written, a script can be made I'd bet.

I am running Windows XP and I can run the glass text script with Create > FX-Foundry > Logos > GlassEffect Text...
The same script also gives Script-fu > glass... which is located way at the bottom of the list of scripts. This one works on anything from text to shapes.

So with script-fu glass we have a beginning. Now for the reflections ... Urg!

I was playing with the script-fu glass too.

It looks pretty good. You could try either curve bending the text or mapping it to a cylinder, to give it the curve of the bottle, before doing the glass effect. Just my guess, though.

How's this? I'm not thrilled with it, but it's a 5 minute throw together.

I like how you curved the text. What did you do to curve it?

Tried a search for bottles to see if I could find some with lettering or patterns molded in the glass. Didn't have a lot of luck but this one is interesting.

Now that one I like!! It's not curved, but facing right at the bottle, it doesn't need to be. I like yours better than mine! It looks real!

I used map object cylinder to make mine. I think I curved it too much.

Actually, it was very easy. I do need to work on curving my text though.

How I did it:

Opened the bottle image.

Made the text and put it where I wanted it. Next would be curving it to the bottle and I've not come up with a good way yet.

Script-Fu > Bevel and Emboss.

I changed the shadow color to one of the darkest colors on the bottle. Used the color picker.

There are several settings you can use. These are the last settings in bevel and emboss. I don't know if they are the ones I used on the bottle up there.

Then I deleted the original text layer and used the highlight and shadow layers.

I didn't spend a lot of time experimenting with it. I'm thinking if the highlight color were a pale shade of the bottle green and run through color to alpha to get rid of the white if it would look more "glassy." Will give that a try.



This one I made the text color the same dark green I made the highlight. Ran the bevel & emboss filter and made the shadow color a very pale shade of bottle's green (d0f373). Merged the highlight and shadow layers. Ran that layer through color to alpha to get rid of white.

Lowered the green text layer's opacity to 25.

The first one looks much more real imo because of the highlights on the text.removing the text color and just keeping the highlighted areas after bevel and emboss is the way to go i think.here is mine with just a bump map effect and curve bend on the logo.A very slight curve bend i might add.

Way to go Rod! Tried it with your settings. I like your method the best.

First i used the free select tool to create the diamond shape, and stroked it 6pixels white.Then I made the text layer white also.Then i merged them (the logo, and text layers) together and added a alpha channel to the image with the bottle.

Then I bump mapped it right into the image itself.
Select the image layer and select Filters/Map/Bump Map
mess around with the map values some more you may get a better effect. =)

But using it before the bump map created too much black in the lettering.
It looks real cool on other stuff though.If you do not have it already you should check it out.
