All of those extra foreign language fonts in gimp are really annoying. Clearly they're not Regular windows fonts because they aren't in the fonts folder or listed in the fonts section of the registry. Can these be found and removed? If so where can they be found?

No are not Font by Gimp but your System fonts...Gimp doesn't add fonts

Maybe your OS filter them automatically in base of your computer language setting ,so by default are not displayed .
But are all Windows fonts(Windows or what OS you use ).

and if you used Adobe programs you should have also tons of Adobe fonts for the most esoteric alphabets

BUT are used : without that fonts you would not see a Jap side with its text in ideograms but a jap side with as text empty boxes

Sure you would not understand ideograms anyway , not even if displayed correctly but at least you will guess are Japanese

But is up to you decide if remove all the fonts in not English alphabet, just remember that are System font you are removing not something added by Gimp

and BTW removing them may crash some program :
if for some reason (as Chinese or Japanese or Russian developers) a software expect to found and use a symbol , but fails because you removed all the fonts where that symbol was included, then the program(s) may become unusable

I second the "risks" explained by photocomix, however I also second the terrible clutter these fonts create. I ended up creating a specific folder for my fonts where I classify and choose them instead of searching the right font in the gimp selector. Of course, if someone knows something that could help gimp managing the fonts within gimp... Please tell us !

I know the risks, that's why anytime i remove a font that might be necessary I zip them first so I can get them back if necessary.

And how many fonts look just like imitations of Ariel and Times New Roman?

Here's a warning from me who's been there and done that. I'm using Fedora Linux. I searched and searched and found those fonts, deleted them and ohhhh myyyyy. It took help from GnuTux to get my text back. All of them were in some kind of characters that definitely were not Roman. Everything: websites, email, etc., were in what looked like Oriental characters.

Bless GnuTux for getting me back to regular Roman characters.

If you are tempted, don't do it!

I removed one font once and it simply killed gimp so I can relate to that. I'll probably end up leaving them there, I don't feel like fighting that battle again. I had a terrible time sorting it out.

This is worth a look for Windows users.

i use a font manager Font Frenzy it really help to manage fonts.
another free is AMP font viewer, font frenzy has more a cool option to sort and kept installed only system fonts, and move all the other in a backup folder, very handy to sort the mess

I noticed a problem with gimp, it always parse all the system font even if the path is removed from preferences ..humm thinking better last time i try was with 2.6 maybe now something changed.

in theory is possible replace (from gimp preferences ) the default path for C:windows/fonts to any other folder, where put only the needed fonts...it was not working on windows with gimp 2.6 but maybe now will work

Instead of deleting them... what if you just go in and replace what is inside with another font?

And if that works... then rename later.
Anyone tried these steps? Possible ??
