I used to run gimp 2.6 on my mac and could view the xcf files in mac finder, but i just updated to 2.8.3 and now all my xcf files are just the default gimp pic.... I am wondering if i have done something wrong when i updated to 2.8.3

you can't see the thumbs or you can not even see enlarged ?

do you mean the icon or the pic itself won't come up in the little window? I have Snow Leopard running McGimp 2.8.3 and I can see my xcf files in finder. I did just allow an update yesterday, and it made the computer wonky for a few minutes, but once it got going all was back to normal.

Gimp 2.8.0 here on Mac OS 10.7.4 and all .xcf files are visible in finder.
Not the icon though - that's little wilber
On my old Mac and with Gimp 2.6 it was the same ...

ok ty for all your replys and the thumbnail .xcf file in finder has a pic of wilber on it.... Before i updated to 2.8.3 i could see the thumbnail as a proper pic but now it will only open in gimp.....I might try and reload 2.8.3 again and see if it makes a diff ty for trying to help.... I reloaded gimp and it made no diff i have noticed that the X11 that used to come up no longer comes up if that could be the problem?...

it depends on what gimp you use. I am using Partha's McGimp and it has X11 and G'Mic built into it already.

I just tried Partha's McGimp and it still only shows the thumbnails with wilbur on them...... I might try and load up the old 2.6 and see if that makes any diff.

Maybe is some problem of file association...humm it does exist a type of image associations speciphic for thumbnails?

Pratically did you explored the preferences and options of your image viewer?
Maybe something there was modified by some Mac update or by some programs

In case going on installing , unistalling and reinstalling different gimp would not help , not if the culprit is the image viewer not using a adequate option

dont you have to have GIMP open to view xcf files????

there is no x11 needed for parthas version because its a native version...its not needed.

I never used to need it open with 2.6 but since i loaded 2.8 i have only been able to view my .xcf files in gimp.... I could view them before just in finder...

i tried Parthas today and the same problem so i am guessing it has some thing to do with my comm i will mess about a little and see if i can sort it out....

i found really surprising that Finder may natively open .xcf file ..are you sure ?
Anyway a new version of gimp may have somehow modified some preference in Finder so again i suggest to look there because in case is from there that may be easily reverted

I use Mac seldom (is my father computer ) so i can't be sure, but that is the first i would try

ha, you can see how little I understand...so X11 was some sort of "translator" so the mac will run programs that otherwise wouldn't run?

*when I open and xcf file in finder, it does take longer than when I open a jpg or png file. I just assumed that the finder was hunting around to find the right method to open the file. My snow leopard has always been able to open xcf files from all gimp versions that I have used.

I apologize in advance because I've not read all the responses but I remember having similar problem and all I did was click the preview panel area in the Gimp browser. Just under Wilber's icon, take a look there.

If this not the problem, I dunno .

The previews work for me. And if not the first, they do after.

PC I have never been able to view xcf files in my finder...secondly..this person says they have never had to use X11 on 2.6 on a mac...I think thats not true..I think this is a person who doesnt really understand what is happening on his computer...unless they are using it on a VM, then maybe not...and since when was there a 2.8.3 version for mac...I do think I would know about that...unless I am a complete numbskull, which wouldnt surprise me...there are all sorts of things wrong with these posts that just dont gel..

Just checked GIMPusers.com...latest version there is 2.8.2

best you let us know what the secret is cos I'd sure the heck like to know and I am sure the developers would too

I dont mind wearing egg on my face if I am wrong tho
