GIMP Version: 2.8.2
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: windows 7
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
trying to install gurm

List any ERROR messages you received:
"gurm.in not found - verify path and correct gurm.py" [after comes] "something about gimps plugin crash - bla bla"

I have been round and around with this for 3 days! First, I had no idea that python came w/gimp 2.8.2 and downloaded python, then gurm, but was only able to edit the py file in idle, needless to say, I gave up and went to bed.
Then, today I read that if only using python w/gimp [which I am] then it's already there, so I reinstalled gurm .7 and was able to choose notepad to edit py file [so I was thrilled] but I am still unable to have my path's correct - here is what I have done so far.....[I am only interested at this point to group brushes]
Windows 7 - gimp 2.8.2 - gurm .7* changed py to say "C:\Users\my user name\.gimp-2.8\plugins" [saved]
* changed .in file - changed all the "yes" to "no" except on the brushes, then on "gimp path" I put
"C:\users\my user name\.gimp-2.8\brushes" [of course not w/quotations] - and for the user path [which is where I think I am making trouble] I made a file in my documents called "gimp brushes" then w/in it I would/will make all the sub-files for how to separate them <floral, shapes, etc>, so I put
"C:\users\my user name\Documents\GIMP BRUSHES"
* then saved this, went to open gimp 2.8.2, to choose gurm from drop down menu and get the error as stated above [regarding paths]
* after looking at it again I realized in the .py file I had typed gimp 2.6, so changed it to 2.8 [thinking that was causing trouble] but not!

I have uninstalled gimp and reinstalled many times especially after finding out I didn't need python downloaded, but when reinstall, it appears as if it is the same [like I didn't delete files] - I have tons of brushes in brush file - any help would be much appreciated - all I can find is help for other OS or if OS is windows, the help is for gimp 2.6, or windows vista.....

Thanks in advance for any tidbit of advice or if anyone can get me up and running [at least to gurm box] I would love it!!!!

The more I think about it the more I am leaning towards downloading an earlier vs. of Gimp!!! Since there is not much help or extras [besides gazillion brushes available] - w/out gurm or another program to keep them out of gimps files, I am killing my computer! = so I will keep playing with INKSCAPE, and make my own brushes, patterns, etc. until I get this figured out...

Thanks..

What a pain. Same problem, gurm in the local plug-ins folder or in the global and all I got was 'can not find gurm.ini' error

Thank heavens I use linux rather than win7. However there is a solution, install gurm into its own folder outside of 'Users' or 'Program files' and point Gimp to that location in preferences -> folders ->plug-ins.

A video to show that it does work http://youtu.be/goLDxiygW_c (5 mins)

GURM works fine in Gimp 2.8x and Windows.
Here's my set-up.

C:\GIMP\Brushes

C:\Users\Odin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gurm.ini
[Brush Manager]
useManager = yes
gimpPath = C:\Users\Odin\.gimp-2.8\brushes
userPath = C:\GIMP\Brushes
extensions = .gbr,.vbr,.gih,.abr,
installedOptions =

C:\Users\Odin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gurm.py
#!/usr/bin/env python

GURMINI = "C:\Users\Odin\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gurm.ini"

# GIMP Unified Resource Manager (GURM)

Thanks - it just wasn't working for me [dunno why]....there was no tutorials how to do it with the new vs. of Gimp and all that was out there was installing python also - which Gimp already has - I just watched the Youtube video [awesome by the way] so hopefully I will get it! I will refer to your set up if I have any questions - thanks for your response and time! It is much appreciated...

The problem is probably a Win 7 'security' setting somewhere. While I used M$ right through from DOS 3.3 to WinXP, in recent years I moved to linux so I am not that clued up on Win7.

While I got Gurm working to my satisfacion in a Win7 (32 bit) + Gimp 2.8.2 VM I know from past experience how installations differ....
I did get the same error message as bucksie and I did try:
The gurm files in both local and global plugins folders.
Adding the gimp plugin folder to the path (I thought 'sure-to-work' but it did not)

I am a great lover of portable applications and I do know that these never seem to work in Win7 from "Program Files" hence the try out with Gurm installed under "C:" Bound to be other ways.

As a very good alternative there are the Marerok MrQ plugins which do work nicely from the local plugin folder. Just given a try in the same VM as before.
for the plugins see:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=669&p=62688&hilit=Mrq#p62688

Some screenshots. Large-ish images so I won't put them in line

Thank you Rich - I also downloaded into the 32 bit - not 64 bit [as I remember seeing that somewhere] - I do have both. I too went through the steps and was all going well, to no avail...

I will look at the MrQ as I have seen that in other posts around..

Thanks for your time.

GURM
All of the Paths in gurm.ini file have to mach the paths set by the
Gimp Edit Preferences Folders and reflected in the personal gimprc file.
Location: Gimp-2.x\.gimp-2.x folder.
If Your interested, I have just uploaded gurm_v0.8zip to GimpScripts.com it
works well. Hope this helpful.

I don't know why you don't try brush manager and forget about Gurm. You don't have to be bothered with the gurm.py or gurm.ini. All you have to do is put the Mr Q folder containing brushes, scripts, gradients and patterns, into your gimp-2.8 plug-in folder. You only have to fill in one at a time, eg. If you want to do the brush folder first, just set it up the way Rich2005 explained. That is all you need to set up brush manager and it loads your brushes much faster than Gurm.
The only difference between mine and yours would be the front and back slashes. In Windows you use the back slashes \ and in Linux you will use the front slash /.

I've got it installed. All the paths are correct and everything.

The only problem is that, for example, checking/unchecking brush types in the GURM doesn't change anything. Am I doing something wrong?

What is your folder structure? In the [user].gimp-2.8 folder you need two for each type.
For example,
brushes (temp files)
brushes_alternative (brush storage).

Oh!

I have: gimp path
user path

Are you saying I should have:
gimp path
user path
gimp_alternative
user_alternative

So I need to create 1 or 2 new folders for each resource? I'm guessing everything goes into a storage file and the temp file is for just for whatever resources I'm using at the time.

Your actual gimp-2.8\brushes folder will become the temp directory. It should be empty other than the selected brush sets through GURM.
The other folder will be where you store your brush sets to call them from GURM.
brushes_stored>animals, people, sky,earth,stone ect...ect (named whatever you wish)

Didn't work.

Should I change the installed options 2.8.2 to 2.8.4?

BTW - I have windows vista 64.

Mikechat, your image can help a lot but gurm 0.8.0/0.8.2 won't work in my system Vista. I tried onkel hatti portable version 32bit, portableapps, winpenpack and nothing happens ( console doesn't return errors) :( . All paths are correct on gurm.ini, gurm 0.7.0 work well with every portable version.
if you watch my screencast download/file.php?id=9837 you can see what happens when i click ok on gurm 0.8.0.
