I'm not sure if this has been covered already, but does anyone know if GIMP 2.8 will be (or is) compatible with Windows 8?

At the Microsoft Compatibility Center for Windows 8 Release Preview the users say yes. You can checkout all your programs at this link.

I didn't look but for past releases of Windows Microsoft has had a compatibility checker program of some sort you can run.

The answer is yes. GIMP 2.8 is compatible with any version of Windows from XP and newer. I've been testing 2.7/2.8 on Win 8 (VBox, windows 8 consumer preview) for the last 6-7 months now, no compatibility issues at all.

Win 8 environment and API isn't that different from Win 7 as the latter compared to, say, Win XP. There will be no significant API changes for upcoming GIMP 2.9 and 2.10 either (except full porting to GEGL and GTK3 later on in 3.0),therefore, they will also be compatible with Win 8.

P.S. Actually, thanks to Partha, last night I've tested his GIMP 2.9 64-bit build on Win 8. It works fine! (well almost fine, but it's not uncommon for any unstable, developmental version)

It may be compatible but WILL NOT always work. I've installed GIMP on Windows 8 twice. It installs fine but first time it would hang when querying new Plug-ins during start up. First time it hung on twain.exe and second time value-propagate.exe Here's a dump from Windows when it freezes.

Now being in software development myself, I know that developers will blame the OS and the OS will blame the software running on it.

Also will not (repeat not) be compatible with Win8 RT (the surface devices) since they use a complete non-Intel architecture.

I just installed GIMP 2.8 on my Win 8 laptop, it works!

As far as I know Gimp 2.8 runs find with windows 8.

This is an old thread; since I last posted, I had to get a new PC w/ 64-bit Win 8.1. GIMP works perfectly fine; trust me.
