ok well I don't ask for help often, but anyway I was wondering how can I make the edges go around an object like the one seen in the award above, and I'm asking how to do this in Gimp of course???

I was thinking the paths tool, but that wouldn't work the way I want. I know Gimp 2.8 will have brush dynamics for direction, and I could do it that way based on rotation, but for a perfect circle idk.

Needs more work, but I created a trangle wave plot (used a Shape Paths Script-fu for that) and the stroked the result and then ran Polar Coordinates filter for the result. :)

You could also run Star in Script-fu - Shape Paths, and make as many points as you want or make the points as shallow or deep as you want, in far less steps.

You could also use "Filters->Render->Gfig". (After drawing the star with the Star Tool, switch to the second "Hand" tool to move the anchor points.)

Wow I never used gfig until now, and I think I'm gonna need a lot of practice with that particular filter to get an effect like the award.

Saul also has a good tip on making making zigzags, I bet even this could work into making the award star.

Works like a charm using Lyle's technique along with a little bit of clean-up:

I figured out an easier way, just made a simple template, like the one below...

and then use Polar Coordinates, and design it however you want, I made an example below...
