Hi there,

It should be a simple task but I can't get this to work, I tried renaming the gbr file itself, no effect, I tried renaming the layer inside, no effect. The .gbr brush I've created desperately appears as: "Gimp brush" in the brush manager, so I can't sort out my brushes alphabetically.

Any ideas ?

Can you just put all the gbr's in a separate folder? and sort them that way

That's what I do.
Although gimp assigns custom brushes it's numerical name, you can create an indefinite number of folders in \GIMP 2\share\gimp\2.0\brushes to sort them out, and put all your custom brushes in specified folder(s). That makes it easier to find them calling tags inside GIMP session rather than brush names.
Here's how my brushes folder looks like

If it's only one brush, you can open it as an image in Gimp by right-clicking and choosing open as image. The name is in the dialog and the only way you can fix that is to change it as you save it. Once you get it with the name you want, you can delete your "Gimp brush" one.

Then, Export it with a .gbr extension and you can rename it in the dialog. I make the filename solid without any spaces, but make the brush name the same but with spaces & capitals:
Pink Bow = Brush Description
pinkbow.gbr = filename

Separate subfolders !
I had no ideas this was possible... Excellent news. On a sidenote, I suspect this method will mess up with the brush preferences of gimp paint studio.

@Oregonian
For an unknown reason, I did not pay attention to this description field !

Thanks everyone, this is solved !

No, it won't. Just take a look at my screenshot again, GPS has it's separate subfolder and brush dynamics settings for GPS sets are intact. Works for me))

It seems your GPS have a separate subfolder, unfortunately, mine has not.
I guess I could redirect the paths to force GPS to use its own subfolder, is it what you've done ?

With 2.8 you can assign tags to these resources, and then reduce the list displayed by filtering on the tags.

That's one more point in favor of 2.8 (:
But it's still not enough, for my usage, to counterbalance its drawbacks.

When I made subfolders in my gimp brushes user file, and filed my brushes in the folders, the tags were automatically applied to the brushes.

Yes, Grits is correct. If you add brushes to a subfolder, it will automatically add the appropriate information to the brush to allow easy filtering.

For example, if you make a subfolder in your brushes folder named "Eyelashes" without quotes, and then typed "Eyelashes" in the filter bar above your brushes in the brushes dockable dialog, it would only show you the brushes in the "Eyelashes" subfolder.

It is a bit picky though. I'm not sure why, but it is case sensitive. Either way, it's very handy if you take the time to organize your brushes.

You don't need to type the name of subfolder within GIMP session, just click on small triangle on the right side of the bar - it will show all brush tags, then click on the one you need.
