Remove the external black is easy but i wish recover the semitransparency from inside the object were the greyscale correspond to degree of transparency

But how ?

EDIT

Huum...is in BW so copy the image and paste as alpha channel or selection ,or layermask may the right direction.
PS

sort of works but with a limit, semitransparent highlight are all recovered but simitramsparent shadow get MIA

Thinking better some were already killed by the Black BG, if you overlay a semitranparent black to pure black
you just get solid black...damn

Like the glass spheres PC. Maybe if jpeg2000 gets adopted, this won't be an issue anymore (not holding my breath though). :)

This may have worked. I ran the image through color to alpha and got rid of the black. Duplicated the layer and inverted the color of the bottom layer so had a white layer on top and bottom black layer, then merged the layers.

I cut off a piece of it and put a red bg behind it to show the results.

That's pretty much what i did except i just ran color to alpha on the black and added a red bg layer.

Looks good Rod, but I believe PC wanted to preserve the gray in the image too.
