Hi! I wonder how can I make a moon-like effect on a sky? I mean moon not like another object, but like the moon is ballooning out of the sky. I attached example, I hope you can see it. Any ideas? Thank you!

Ooops, you are right, it doesn't. There is extra http. This should work http://favim.com/image/461032/. It should show the example of the moon I am asking about

Nice picture.
I'd guess it's done with a combination of layer modes, graduated layer masks and layer transparency. I'm sure someone much cleverer than me will be along soon to explain!

I can think of something easy to create planets or moons:
Create a new image with same width and height(eg 500x500). Then "Render"> "Clouds"> "Difference clouds". Make a sphere with "Map" > "Map Object" marking "Transparent background" and "Create new layer". Then select the sphere layer and "Layer" > "Transparency" > "Color to Alpha" and you choose Black as the color to make transparent. You will get a semi-transparent sphere which you can put on some sky. If you want to make the outer glow in a new layer you make a hollow white circle slightly larger than the sphere (Elliptical selection and then Edit > Stroke Selection) and apply a big value of Gaussian blur.
Of course I can think of countless variations to what I've said.

Edit:The sphere should not be transparent, avoid the "color to alpha" step. I do not know what I was thinking, maybe design a soap bubble
Edit 2:Or maybe with the transparency it remains similar to the picture that you have as an example.

Interesting how we view things differently... I was thinking of starting with a photograph of the Moon!

Could just use a layer mask, start at the middle of the moon and drag to the top

Ok, my signature already warned it

You can do what alc59 said, or simply erasing with the eraser tool.
Paste the sphere on the sky as a new layer. Use the eraser tool with a blurry brush to smoothly erase some lower part of the sphere to look coming out from the sky (Use a medium opacity value in Eraser Tool)

File comment: I think I am happy with it. I think... When I showed it to my husband he thought it was a sunrise. That's not the affect I was trying to create. Any way, it's a big improvement in my learning GIMP.

It looks like the city is inside a force-field. Actually, it looks cool!

alc59, I am trying to reproduce your moon and I cannot. Can you give step by step direction?!
