Misunderstanding going on? From what I understand, fullback doesn't ask us to create for him:
Quote:
to challege someone to help me design this emblem

But I admit that the way it's written may lead to confusion...
fullback, I suggest you begin your emblem work then when you're stuck, write your issues here.

I'd suggest you do some very basic tutorials to grasp fundamentals of digital editing where you'll learn to think layers above layers, think blend mode, try filters, wander around in the tabs and menus, import image, import texture and so on... You don't need art lessons (or even gimp lessons) to enter this world, you will need them at some point if you're addicted and want to deepen your knowledge but for a start, no, absolutely not.

Personally, I first started to mess around with gradient filter (located in menu Filters → Light and Shadow → Gradient Flare), it pleased me because it gave some immediately visible results, and as I was new at this, it just seemed awesome to do that with few clicks on a mouse. Ah, memories... (:

Simple tasks for a start:
- recolour images
- edit luminosity/contrast
- throw filters onto text
...
