One thing you need is to work on a new transparent layer then play with layer modes to see what the best results will be. I commonly use grain merge for something like this as it allows texture to show through without affecting the colour too much.

skiny: do you mean something like this but with a different plane and flag?

in that case i can tell you exactly how i made this one - i wasn't too fussy about the details because i was in a hurry, but if you're willing to put down a bit of time and work on it you should be able to get it to look really good.

oh, and welcome to gimp chat :)!

@skiny,
What is the aircraft you wish to place the flag on? I could do it and then post how it was done, so that you can follow along.
I just need to have an image of the craft and flag, with notes on how you want the flag oriented.

@skiny,

Where would you like the flag to be places on the craft?

Also, are you sure that you want to use a British flag that looks like it's waving?

That is a good question Wallace, I thought the same thing. I would think the Union Jack should be flat, and not wavy for this job.

#Skiny:
You would try this with another pic of the plane, without camo paint. The best way is use a layer with the plane in grayscale to apply a displacement filter or Garagecoder's warp map filter (G'mic). Also you'll need to use more of one layer with the flag and place these according aircraft perspective. The work would make with mask layers over the color pic. The problem is obtain the best blend mode

#AnMal:
Is the Viggen's pic original or manipulated?

@Molly,

Yes same here.
I'm former military and if there were any pictures/decals or paintings of the flag on a vehicle or anything else, they would have been non-waving depictions of the flag.

The whole aircraft!... That's another story entirely, don't know if I can do that and have it look convincing. What you want would make a really great challenge for us Gimpers.
I can give it a go, but I can't make any promises.

i have seen an aircraft on the web done a while ago though it was a hawker hunter painted with the stars and stripes,but i cant find the page,i have tried a number of times now to cover it but a lot of the detail ,shadows/ shine and curves simply dont come out .The hawks look brillient in the union flag and the vulcan would be out of this world.
