Thought I would share one way you could create the orange stripes, If you know the original diameter of your orb then create a path twice the size, In my example below the orb is 200px in diameter so I have created a circular path 400px in diameter. Then using the move tool, make sure it is set to path move and position your path, stroke path using desired settings, I selected the orb first so the path tool wouldn't stroke outside of the circle.
I finally duplicated the two lines I had created and rotated this new layer by 180 degrees and positioned under the orb to create the rear lines.

Excellent idea! :) :bigthup

For those who don't want to create a transparent sphere from scratched, there is a script on the Script-fu plugin call Glossy Orb.

Is on the Script-fu>Create New>Glossy Orb
[ Image ]

Once you choose the size you want click Ok and the script will create a Glossy sphere
[ Image ]

After that go to Edit>Undo and you will get the layers that compose the Glossy Orb. Hide the Background layer and the Gradlayer and there you have a very well made Glassy Orb.

That's a nice script. I've looked & I can't find it.

Hi mackenzieh, did you try typing 'orb' in the plugin browser?

If installed on your Gimp, it will show you which menu it is under.
If not the attached zip has the two orb scripts that I have installed.
Just place them in your [scripts] folder and restart Gimp or Refresh Scripts.

Here's the ancient history Ron Scott's Tutorial - Glassy Spheres: http://gug.criticalhit.dk/tutorials/ronq3/ for making somewhat more opaque glassy spheres.

Thank you Kevin. I made it into a PDF to try something before the weekend.

Thanks for the heads up on the script. :bigthup

@paynekj - Thanks for the link. I haven't been to that site in a long time. I didn't even know it was still around. While the site is kinda slow, I did notice there was a page of older, but still useful, tutorials there.
