GIMP Version: 2.8.4
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
No plugins

List any ERROR messages you received:
When bringing up GIMP a error message pops up and says GNU image manipulation program has stopped working. It then says that windows will close the program and notify you if a solution occurs.

Hello,
I have been using GIMP for a year for simple image editing and have never installed and plugins, brushes, or fonts. Today I tried to bring it up and when I clicked on it it loaded up until the point where it said it was loading "tool preset", and then the error message came up. "GNU image manipulation program has stopped working." It then says that windows will close the program and notify you if a solution occurs, at this point nothing happens and the program closes. I googled it but nothing seemed to work! Something suggested deleting the rc files, which didnt help. Something else said to uninstall then re-install, which I later learned is not recommended. Help please!

Start Gimp from the command line using 'verbose' and post the output here.
[path to Gimp 2] \bin\gimp-2.8.exe --verbose

I don't understand, how do you start it from the command line?
Thanks for the help!

Time Required: Starting the Command Prompt tool in Windows 7 should only take a few seconds or so.
Here's How:

Click on the Start button.

In the search box, type the following:

command

Click on Command Prompt in the search results listing.

Tip: If Command Prompt is listed first, which is likely, you can simply hit Enter on your keyboard instead of clicking the result with your mouse.

Command Prompt will now open and you can use it to execute whatever command you're interested in running.

See my Windows 7 Command Prompt Commands list for details about all the commands available from the Command Prompt in Windows 7.

Note: See Tip #1 below if you see a message after executing a command about needing administrative rights or access to an elevated command prompt.

open command prompt

So I followed the instructions....
A black box popped up titled command prompt, and now I should post here the text in the box?

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

C:\Users\Tammy Lyn>

Is this right or is there something else I need to do/should have done?

Youcan try to right click on your Gimp shortcut -> Properties
Then at the "Target" line , add
--verbose
after what's already there.

When you'll launch Gimp it will display the console too

I added --verbose to the target line, when I tried to save it I got a message that said it was invalid....then I just tried to launch gimp with the properties box open and I got the same error message as before, the one that said it had stopped working.

Brogun showed you a way to find the path by copying the target line from a shortcuts properties.

  1. To open a command prompt in Windows.
Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt
Your command prompt (command line) should look similar to this.
    Image
  2. One way to find the path to Gimp, search for gimp-2.8.exe. To copy the full path for gimp-2.8.exe, hold down the Shift key as you right-click the file, choose Copy As Path. Paste at the command prompt, add --verbose and hit enter. You need to use double quotes around everything except --verbose (see #4 below).
  3. Another way to find the path to Gimp at the command prompt type, where gimp.
    where gimp
  4. The part you add to the command line next should look similar to this (include quotes).
    "C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.8.exe" --verbose
This command will start Gimp and output messages to the command prompt. As long as the command prompt window is open messages will be generated as you work. When you close this command prompt window, Gimp will close.
  5. Copy the results from the command prompt window, post here.

wiki.gimp.org: Getting and posting the output of gimp --verbose

Current version of Gimp ( download link ).

Have you added any new hardware lately? Also have you updated all your drivers lately?
If that doesn't work -
Try Start>Control Panel/System/Advanced and click the settings button under performance.
Now select the data execution prevention tab - and select turn on dep for windows programs and services ONLY.
Select OK - select OK again. Close the control panel window dialog and try to start GIMP again.

You need to cd to the directory "bin" first then do gimp-2.8.exe --verbose
Type
cd C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\
press enter

Then type
gimp-2.8.exe --verbose
then press enter key again.

Okay, that time I didn't get the error message from the command prompt. However, after I hit enter the second time and it started to bring up gimp I got the same error message. "Gimp has stopped working".
:gaah

Try it one more time but add > gimp-log.txt after --verbose. Send gimp-log.txt here.

"C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\gimp-2.8.exe" --verbose > gimp-log.txt

Don't forget the spaces.

I'm stumped.
Did you try again using only, gimp-2.8.exe --verbose?
Are there any messages when you do that?
Have you tried the upgrade route yet?

For real! I don't know why nothing is working...thank you so much for trying though!
I just tried again using only gimp-2.8.exe --verbose. Basically what happens is it starts to bring up gimp, it gets to the point where it says "looking for data files" and then right below it it says "tool preset" (which I guess it is trying to load?).
This is what the error message looks like.

It would be helpful if you could post all the text in the console window here. You should be able to save it to a text file or use select all and copy it.

Is it possible for you to close the Windows error box (using the top right x) and then access the console window text?
