Is there a way to make flat design drop shadows like this in gimp or raster-based editors in general?

possibly something like duplicating the layer, motion blur on bottom layer and duplicating until it is opaque enough. Levels adjustment at the end.

Motion blur on a stroke i think would work.

Tried that, comes out real ugly, Erisian. But I'd love to see somebody else try it. ;)

Thanks Rod! I think motion blur makes it look kind of dirty - well, at least I couldn't make a pixel-perfect image
but using the path sounds like a good idea. I'd probably try some of the ofnuts' path scripts, maybe intermediate or path in between?

I was able to come fairly close by rotating the text and using the Wind filter (unfortunately, the Wind filter doesn't have an Angle option).

I then re-applied the Wind filter but switched the Edge option from "Leading" to "Trailing" and cut the strength in half. (This was done to minimize the amount of blurring in the following step that would show up in front of the letters. There may be a better way.)

Apply some Gaussian blur, rotate the layer back (use the negative of the value you used previously), et voila!

I think that's pretty close, saulgoode, yet not the same. I even like your first image more,
maybe make it more dense and uniformly distributed (the shadow)
In my opinion, what makes these shadows stand out is the edge sharpness.

It's a modern trend in webdesign graaphics these days and mostly done with vector-based editors.
Maybe applying paths in gimp would do the trick?

Nice one Saulgoode. :bigthup
Using the wind filter blurred to create a shadow effect. :)
That is very close.

I wonder if you could just do this with CSS?

G'MIC's wind option does have an angle option. Only problem with it is that last time I used it, it was slow as molassas. :)

- Text-to-path, stroke path with a 2px lines on new layer
- Autocrop layer and copy to clipboard, select "Clipboard brush" and give it a very low spacing
- Set a dynamics for the paint brush that associates fade with opacity
- Stroke a short diagonal path with the brush
- Tweak opacity using Levels/Curves on the layer mask

Possibly better results by removing some elements of the path.

@ofnuts Maybe it would look better with simple shapes.
With typos it's a lot more challenging but the results should be looking
like this

Image

I did some similar stuff with Interpolate plugin in Inkscape
unfortunately, the plugin breaks on compound paths (typos)
but still does a good job on open and closed simple paths.

this should be a request for G'MIC
its basically a directional blur effect, isnt it

personally i dont like the effect (just a taste thing), but its always good to have more options
so a new filter, or new options for an existing filter would be great

You could do a light too height filter on some white lines with black background while it is at an upside down 45 degree angle then straighten it out and make it a Multiply mode layer above the green and opacity at about 50 percent with another transparent layer having the black lines above that.

Lot of work. I wish there was a light to height filter that had various direction options. I know how someone could make this from my earlier post: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=8088

Don't see why it should be a request for gmic filter.
It's a question of technique. In theory, versatile programs like PS or GIMP
should be able to reproduce the effect pixel-to-pixel, don't they?
But they can't. At least, I've seen none so far.

Motion/directional blur simply doesn't cut, I've tried.

Oh, I like the effect, it's looks dramatic, novel and off the beaten path.
Personally, not impressed with shiny or textured stuff anymore,
to my taste, they all look like yesterday. But it's just me

@ tonysteel It's a good find and good result. I just don't get why the lower part
of the shadow doesn't fade out as the upper. Other than that it's almost perfect.

@Pegleg That's a lot of work but looks interesting

because for some effects you just need the right tools

i know what you mean
Gimp is somewhat stuck in a past decade but i still feel all the "old" texteffects that you can find on the internet need to be explored and re-engineered because, well nobody did it, or at least i have never seen anything like it anywhere and i think thats a pity

we have new aesthetics now - i see it in fashion (Rick Owens, Julius, Lost & Found, Boris Bidjan Saberi, etc.) and its great
everything seems to go more into the minimalistic direction

tbh, the texteffects i do, are really just bad taste, they always were
just imagine a CD cover with a gold texteffect - horrible, lol

its gimmick crap
but at the same time they are a lot of fun to do

Are you asking for a complement, Esper? ;)
I can give it to you without hesitation - you are one of few who
never produce crap. And you know damn well my opinion about
your work. I said it many times before and I say it again -
yours are the best text effects here. :)

Ok, this is my attempt.

I outlined text using paths, bump map in the direction I wanted the light, then duplicated this layer and changed to black text copied this layer.

Opened up the brush dialogue and changed dynamics to colour fade, set a gradient of foreground to transparency, then started from middle of image paint in a straight line the direction I wanted the shadow. Gaussian blur of 5px on the layer then reduce opacity.
