As there are so many fonts, I was wondering if there is a way to somehow group your favorite fonts so that they are easier to find?

What many people do is group fonts in separate directories outside of Gimp's reach and use an add-on manager to put individual directories on-line when needed. Having too many fonts "live" at the same time slows down Gimp (I even have the report of someone making Gimp unusable by trying to use it with 10.000 fonts).
