Mahvin's Tie-Dye tutorial comes close.

There's probably an effect somewhere that makes those kind of bleeding-like spikes.

Needs some experimentation but here are some thoughts that may be useful:

Create a displacement map consisting of vertical striations

Create a spiral gradient and then apply the displacement map to that spiral in rectangular coordinate space.

How did you get those long, smooth curves in From Polar?

Even though I didn't get those long curves in From Polar, I went ahead and gave it a try.

I need to work a bit more on it but I'm pretty sure I can get there from here.

Very interesting method, saulgoode. I like it a lot. Thank you.

How about:
Attachment:
Os spiral flower.png
Os spiral flower.png [ 342.88 KiB | Viewed 4481 times ]

To make it I began following Saul's guiding hand. I started with a 400x400 white image and added an alpha channel then rendered a plasma . Then I used the Filter > Distorts > Wind with settings of Wind, Left, Both, 7, 100. Next I selected a 10x400 px rectangular selection from an appealing area. Next I cropped to my selection, and resized my canvas back to 400x400px, but did not resize the layers. Next, use Layer, Scale, Break the chain and set to 400x400px. Select None. Now I used GMIC > Deformation > Twirl to give me a reasonably tight spiral with output onto a new layer, now select the new spiral layer and run GMIC > Deformation > Flower. I set the # of petals to 20, and you can get variations by changing the amplitude of the petals. It doesn't quite have the fuzziness at the edges of the petals as the others I've seen.

Very nice variation there, Bob.

I used a "circle depth percent" of 100%.

As long as you use the same "circle depth percent" for both going from polar and going to polar coordinates, it shouldn't matter too much what the actual value is (I think 100% will preserve the most quality though).

Well, drat. I tried to upload my pic, didn't get the url copied, and it didn't post. Now I can't re-upload it because it says it's already uploaded...but I don't know the url. I am still getting used to using a track pad, so I'm all thumbs these days. I didn't quite figure out the to and from polar part of the tut. So is there a way I can find my pic on this server?

What I usually do, is just add a number digit to the file, and re-submit. I agree it's not the best way, if someone can explain how to find the original URL, that would be best.

I may have figured out the addy by looking at the addys of other pics I posted. I hope no one will know that I spelled tie dye wrong in the filename, lol.
Oh yes, got it! You can see that not doing the to polar, from polar step sort of messed it up.

2-ton, The upload tool won't upload the file with the same name twice, as mav said just change i digit or letter and it will go.....

very nice job on your gradient effect.

I can get to polar coordinates by distorts > polar, but I don't see from polar. Where do I find that?

I don't get any curves. All it does is slant the straight lines. Changing the offset angle only moves the image around, no curves.

O:

1. You have to use the spiral mode in Blend.
2. Run the Filters - Map - Displace, (use Polar, not Cartesian)
3. Run Filters - Distorts - Polar Coordinates (Polar)

I did use the spiral blend. I just don't get those curves in the From Polar process that saulgoode did and no matter what I do, I don't get them.

I just don't understand why I can't get the curves in the Polar Coordinates for the From Polar that saulgoode did. It just straightens out the curves of my spiral blend.

Ok, one question: Did you center it? I just centered my spiral and polar coordinate bent it straight. So, I offset the spiral shape away from center and presto, it worked.

Aha! And I was so careful to center my gradient using guides to do it. Now my From Polar curves along with the best of them.

Thanks, mahvin, you get the Sherlock Holmes super-sleuth award on that one. Image
