GIMP Version: 2.8.6
Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

Hi,

I've recently been tweeting back and forth with my friend Jay. Jay has recently downloaded GIMP. She has given me permission to ask for help. Jay is using the newest version which is 2.8.6 and she's using windows 7/64 bit. When she tries to load the program she gets this:

What is it that she is doing wrong?

Any help would be great. :)

Thanks,

Mackenzie

Jay downloaded it from Gimp.org which probably took her to the sourceforge site.

Try running gimp from the console, using the /v verbose switch, which will display more details as to where the problem is when it locks. I see that is says something about tag cache on the splash screen.

She just uninstalled it, so should I tell her to re-install it and to try running gimp from the console using the /v verbose switch? Also, how would she locate the console?

I would just have the user start gimp from the console, using the /v option, and post the output back here. Perhaps someone here can recognize what the problem is.

I don't see the need to re-install the same version again, at least at this point.

Translation for Windows 7 or 8:

1 ) Start>"run" ,... and this will pop out

Image

In the text field type the path for gimp.exe and add --verbose ...Click OK or press "enter"

it should be something as "C:\Program Files\Gimp-2.8.6\bin\gimp.exe --verbose" but without the "" quotes,
i say "something as" because i have not that version, i use only portable,
to be sure of the path just RIGHT CLICK on gimp.exe (in the Gimp "bin" subfolder ,in Program Files ) there chose "propriety" and copy the path, so could be no errors

Thanks PC. Would this work since she has already uninstalled the program?

Sorry, I didn't notice that you said she uninstalled it. I was under the impression we were trying to determine why the version she had installed wasn't working.

Since she has already uninstalled it, perhaps she should try another version, Patha's maybe?

Obviously not

Make it simple try the portable version from here http://www.partha.com
it includes some of the best pluginspreinstalled support also pyton plugin,

and usually portable version magically solve similar problems

May be "installed " everywhere in the HD or external drives , everywhere EXCEPT "Program Files" because there 7 and 8 would place a lock, blocking some functions

Jay tried the portable version of GIMP and it still won't work for her. Jay has now told me that her problem can't be solved. I was really hoping that she would get to use GIMP.

I have been using Gimp 2.4.2 for several months. I run Win 7/64 bit. Today it wouldn't open and gave me the same screen seen in the first post in this thread. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Gimp, 2.8.6. I still get the same screen at start up. I ran the program from the command prompt as suggested. I can't find a way to post the screen shot, the board thinks it's spam. The last few lines were:

INIT: gimp_initialize
INIT: gimp_real_initialize
INIT: gui_initialize_after_callback
INIT: gimp_restore
Parsing 'C:\Users\name\.gim-2.8\parasiterc'
Loading 'brush factory' data
Loading 'dynamics factory' data
Loading 'pattern factory' data
Loading 'palette factory' data
Loading 'gradient factory' data
Loading fonts
Loading 'tool preset factory' data

Any ideas on what to do next? I downloaded the install for 2.8.6 from Source Forge.

Hi and welcome to the board. You need to have a total of 5 posts before you can post links or images. My friend Jay is still having the same issues. I hope there's a solution to this problem.

Uninstall/Reinstall is rarely a solution. This cargo cult technique sometime works in Windows because the installer is the only thing that can fix the values in the Windows "registry", but Gimp doesn't use the registry. With Gimp you just erase/rename the Gimp profile and start over. Gimp will create a fresh one with default values.

So the solution is to rename the profile?

Apparently that is the solution. It worked. :yes

Gimp had been locking up after getting to tool-presets. When it made the new profile it had removed a file in the tool-presets folder in my Gimp profile. I think it is where I tried to save some settings for the crop tool. So it might clear a different file to fix your problem.

Thanks so much for the advice. I am thrilled to have the Gimp running again. :paint

I recently spoke to my friend Jay through twitter and she has tried to rename the profile to get gimp to load, but that doesn't seem to be working. Is there anything else that she can try to get gimp to load?

If was something in the profile the portable version should have worked

Anyway if she use the normal version it is a good idea delete the profile in case of problem (it is recreated new the first time gimp will load , so nothing is lost except old saved preferences

Done that she may try
1) temporary close all antivirus, firewall etc ( she may temporary disable connection to avoid risk...just to troubleshoot and see if is a antivirus the cause
2) run gimp as "admin"
3) run gimp in "compatibility mode"

Honestly 1 (some antivirus or security setting that lock gimp ) still seems to me the most probable cause
