Was a discussion here a couple years ago and I also thought I copied it for future reference.
Can someone one tell me how to cut out a portion of a photo where I can have the edges feathered or blurred.
All I remember is doing a radius of 20 after selecting but don't remember the other settings

Maybe make a selection, Edit>Cut and then Select>Border with 'Feather border' box checked?

Thank you K1TesserEna. Followed what you said but it didn't give me the desired effect.

What settings would I need to get this?

Make your selection, the go to " Select → Feather" and try 20, 30 or even 40. Check to see if the selection you made was the correct size. If the feather is to much, your selection was too large. Not enough... too small.

You can also refine the feather by using the "fuzzy select tool". Select inside you feather and grow the selection by whatever and clear this selection. If the edge look to hard feather by 1 or 2 and clear once again.

Thank you guys. I think I have finally got it with your help.

Selected the picture I wanted out of a photo, inverted the selection, checked feather edges, radius to 20 and everything else was default, then I cut. Because the original picture was quite large (3,000+ pixels on the longest edge) I cut this out of it.

As above, Select/Feather or use the "feather" option of the selection tools.

For more control (you can interactively adjust the feathering):
- Paste the unfeathered selection to a new layer border, and Alpha to selection, or copy the whole layer and make a selection on the subject
- Add a layer mask, transferring the layer's alpha channel
- Fill the shape on the mask with a shaped gradient (which is a function of the distance to the outline)
- Then use the Brightess/Contrast or Levels or Curves to adjust the blend.

Uh? I don't see the "cage tool" in what looks like the standard issue toolbox.

That's 2.6.11 in my screenshot, but I do have Partha's portable 2.8 on a flash-drive.
If that counts for anything. :hehe
