I've only been here for one day and I'm already in trouble! So I saw the awesome links to the picture to people website. I was wowed, and so was my friend whom I am doing a promotional flyer for. She loves this certain effect of the 3d text with a metal texture... Its called metallic035 but I can not post a link

So although I don't like it she LOVES it. but I can only get it at a resolution of 72/72 and I have to have 300/300 for printing. huge sigh.

I am a basic/intermediate user, I know how to use the filters and many of the tools. I do lots of tutorials and I am trying to learn. This person is a friend, and she is just in LOVE with this text. Does anyone know of a tutorial that would help me understand how to make this on my own? I can make the three d text effect, its the pattern that throws me. I think I need to make a bump map, but I am not really sure how those work, or how to make one...

I know it is asking a lot, but I hope someone will know where to point me. Thanks in advance.

Is this the effect?

If so, you might find this useful http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3792 For other metal effects, search through Draconians tutorials. You'll find them in the tutorials index.

Hi AllenaMae & welcome to GC!

Your first step would be to find or create a seamless pattern of the texture you would like to use on your text/logo/image. I believe that pattern is normally referred to as a "Tread Pattern". There are various styles of tread patterns. Once you have a seamless pattern, you can use the Logo Toolbox Script to easily apply your pattern to Text/Logo/Image.

Here is a quick example, using a tread pattern I already have.

Hope that helps point you in the right direction.

GnuTux, thank you. I'm a little in awe of you and your scripts. Kudos to you and I could maybe someday explain to you how to turn a heel on hand knitted socks or how to make handmade pasta stuffed with goat cheese. At that time you can be in awe of me but for now lets just pretend for a moment I'm dumb as a box of hammers. It's ok, hammers are important too.

Do not understand stuff that obviously is a given in the tutorials... I was working through the metal wurx tuts yesterday and I am mystified by this user folder and refreshing business...

"I have also included a gradient and a script that you will need to complete some of the steps in this tutorial. Download the attachments and place them in your “user” gradients and scripts folders. Don’t forget to refresh your scripts/gradients or restart Gimp. "

<minionVoice> whaaaaaaa? </minionVoice"

I also do not know where to stick the script if you catch my drift. I did manage ot get the graident int he right place, but since corrupted my files somehow and am re-installing. Fresh start YAY!

I believe Win7 is the same as vista in this. Try C:users - your name - Gimp 2.8

Well, I understand how some of these terms and concepts can be "Greek" when you're just starting with GIMP, but you'll soon catch on, I'm sure. Plus, this site has lots of helpful members who can nudge you along when you get stuck.

Basically, GIMP provides various folders for patterns, gradients, brushes , scripts and other resources. Just copy any new files you have into one of those resource folders and restart GIMP. Or, you can "refresh" that resource without restarting GIMP, by clicking the little refresh icon Image at the bottom of the dialog for each resource you want to "refresh".

If you're using Windows, this might help.

Handmade pasta, with goat cheese, sounds tasty. :hehe

I have been doing that, only coppying them into the gimp files themselves. I do pretty good, I know the basics, I go through the user manual but somehow I missed this...its ingenious!

I assume I put the maps I need for the script in user/gimp2.8/environs?

In that case, no. You can keep the environment maps anywhere you want. That environ folder in GIMP is for something different. I believe it's used for postscript/ghostscript stuff. I've actually never needed to use it.

YES! That is what she wants, it makes my eyes hurt but she wants it and she will have it if I can manage it. LOL

Now that I understand where to store textures I could GASP MAKE MY OWN....

LOL

GnuTux - I will remove them from the offensive file and give it a good talking to for lying to me...I promise you that.

Thank you again!

The biggest problem I am having is that I don't know the right words like treads and now that I know what I need and can see what it is I can make it. I know how to use the tools pretty well. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

The terms "Patterns" and "Textures" are kinda used interchangeably. You would store those (.pat files) in the gimp-2.8/patterns folder.

After creating your own pattern in GIMP, you'll need to "Export" it to the /patterns folder with the file extension of .pat, which will convert to GIMP Pattern/Texture format.
