How can I get the text to have a curve on the bottom and have the top remain flat?

As above

You could try the warp text script.

This is a video I made for someone a while ago, Gimp 2.6 but the same in Gimp 2.8

Coincedence - straight top and curved lower edge.

Otherwise look at Inkscape and import into gimp.

The other option is to use the curve bend script found under filters>distort but this does tend to leave the edges very blocky.

Takes a little patience but the script is an old favorite and warps text well

Tried warp text.

Tried layers.

Couldn't get curve bend to cooperate.

Looks good tonysteele and is by far more precise than the warp filter (you just need a little patience while it does it's thing)

@Graechan, I made a text then on another layer I made the Bezier shape, I then ran Saul's script but nothing happens
Is the text supposed to be selected.. Do I run the script in the path dialoge or the layers with the text selected. Yours turned out great.

Don't make a new layer, just make your text layer and make your Bezier shape path and run the script.

The text layer is supposed to be the active layer. The active path should be your Bezier shape. With these two conditions met, it does not matter whether you run the script from the path dialog or the layers dialog.

Thank you Saul I will give that a try, so I make the bezier shape in the say layer as the text.

EDIT It didn't work.

Molly, it appears that you performed a Layer To Image Size or somesuch on your text layer. This results in it no longer being a text layer and makes it unusable by my script.

Note that it does not matter where on the image your text layer appears, or how large it is. The final path produced by the script will be scaled and placed within the Bezier patch.

There is the text, should be a text layer (colour does not matter), and I thought the path looked a bit dubious as well.
needs 4 nodes but just the three sides.

I tried it again and the script worked but this is what I ended up with.

That is good,
move off the text layer to another
turn off the original text layer.

now go to the paths dialog, stroke it, put to a selection and fill with colour, gradient, pattern, anything that goes in ;)

I did all that but the selection won't stroke, it won't fill, I am going to start all over again from scratch, I am not going to let this beat me. grrrrrrrr
I can stroke the text, but it wont fill. I even tried using a paintbrush to fill inside the text but it just paints the stroke.

You have to do "Selection>Path to selection" and then fill the selection.

I did that Carlos. I think I did everything I can think of but when I do, it just puts more color on the outline.

Thank you for the vid Rich and thanks Carlos for referring.
I can get the the curved or distored path, I can go path to selection but can't go selection to path. I can stroke the selection but it won't let me fill. Every time I try fill, it just fills the outline instead of inside. I know it is something stupid but thats me. It also won't me move the text up into the centre.
Image
As you notice, I can take the paint brush, fill it will a color and I can paint the outline a different, but not the center. go figure.
