Rod,
this is the full path in Environment Variables
C:\Program Files (x86)\PC Connectivity Solution\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live;%GTK_BASEPATH%\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Roxio Shared\10.0\DLLShared\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Shared;C:\Python26\bin;C:\Python26\libs;C:\Python\tcl;C:\Python26\Lib;C:\Python26\DLLs

How do I find the path to Python in Windows 7? In the screen shot below, it shows up in C: but up top there is no path. In Windows XP, it would show the path at the top. Does anyone out there with Windows 7 know how to get this. thanks

Normally I am using linux and do not have any problems with Python, it updates as necessary from the repo.

But I do have a Windows XP sp3 machine with gimp 2.6.11 and python 2.5 installed. Always been reluctant to upgrade this on the basis of 'if-not-broke-dont-fix'. However some recent python scripts do not like python 2.5. It seems that a number of people, like Molly have installation/upgrade problems so I did a few tests before taking the plunge.

All these were in a virtualbox XP sp3 (32bit) machine. A few things in common.

A reboot after installing python so the rest properly pick up the registry. A reboot after installing Gimp & giving it a first run. I used a couple of test scripts a python-bevel that I know works in py2.5 and ofnuts ribbon-path that I can't get to work in py2.5

1. A new install of python 2.6 and gimp 2.6.11. I have had problems with python 2.6 before so I was a bit sceptical of the latest packages but python-2.6.6.msi and pygtk-all-in-one-2.24.0.win32-py2.6.msi followed by gimp2.6.11 did work. Both test scripts working.
Some stats that I logged. Python 2.6 installed 2284 files&folders and 527 reg entries. gtk-all-in-one 8233 files 15928 reg entries.

2. Python 2.6 installed parallel to py2.5. Uninstalled gimp and renamed the .gimp2.6 folder.
Installed py2.6 as before. Reinstalled gimp, ran once, rebooted. The 2 test scripts work ok.

3. Install Python 2.6 over py2.5 The Python files occupy about 180 MB of disk space so I gave this a try. Uninstalled gimp installed python 2.6 into the python 2.5 folder, then the rest. The python scripts show in their relevent menus but (not surprisingly) do not work.

4. Uninstall python 2.5 and install python 2.6. I uninstalled all the python stuff using the control panel uninstall menu. A scan of the registry showed very few residual entries - always a good sign. Uninstalled gimp and then it was as a new install. Test scripts working.

Best bet - if you don't mind the wasted space, just try a parallel install.

that is very interesting but confusing. When you say uninstall Gimp, do you mean remove the whole thing?

I already removed Python 2.5

molly if you delete it save all of your brushes and scripts etc in a folder before you scrub the program...just my thoughts...

Yes, you have to uninstall gimp, then reinstall after installing all the Python 2.6 stuff.

I just did an upgrade to my 'real' Win XP machine and completely uninstalled all the python stuff (the separate packages) python - gtk - cairo - gobject using control panel -> uninstall. Then uninstalled Gimp. Renamed my local .gimp2.6 folder to save my local plugins and what was left of my global gimp folders for what was left there (pspi, photivo etc plugins).

Then install python 2.6 -> reboot, install gtk-all-in-one, install gimp -> reboot. A bit of renaming, moving to restore my old stuff and all works fine.

Not the same as your setup, been using M$ since DOS 3.3 and windows since Win3.0 and I know how screwed up M$ can be.

Maybe back to the beginning, uninstall everything, make sure you have the correct packages for 32 or 64 bit and install bit-by-bit.

gimp 2.7 from partha has not this problem python is already included

Just a tought if you can not solve easily in other ways:
install the portable version of gimp 2.7 from partha alongside, the portable will not conflict with other versions

Ok thanks PC.
I am at the end of my rope now, time for drastic measures.
I will do that, as long as I don't have to take out 2.6.11.......

I wlll post back here with results....

Oops, forgot to ask, would I have to take out Cairo, probject and pygtk first?

Would be better clean up but is not strictly needed, anyway is a good measure unistall programs that you will never use or as in this case are clones (all of that is already included in 2.7)

here is the 32 bit portable http://www.partha.com/downloads/gimp-2.7.3-32bit.exe

and here the 64 bit

http://www.partha.com/downloads/gimp-2. ... e64bit.exe

Both will run on a 64 bit PC, the first may be adapt if you have no mare of 3 GB ram, the second has no limtation for ram but will support only 64 bit version of plugins (samj and partha anyway already compiled most of plugin at 64 bit )

Post subject:  Re: Python Not found in Registry

Hey Molly,

Partha's compile (2.7.3) will not interfere with your current GIMP, but, before installing it, I would highly recommend temporarily renaming your User>.gimp2.6 folder to something else since 2.7.3 will try to import previous GIMP stuff from the new .gimp2.7 folder and many (if not all) plugins and script-fus are not going to work in 2.7.3 from the 2.6.x folders. Just warning you. I had to completely un-install 2.7.2 (I actually installed that version first; upgraded when Partha released the new version; during upgraded, I renamed the old GIMP folder again; lol) and delete the .gimp2.7 folder in the user directory because of the import situation.

Do not forget to rename your old folder back once Partha's install is finished. :)

PC Instead of doing all that, I downloaded it to my 18GB flash drive. so far so good. I have to add brushes, gradients etc., etc. so will take a while. I do have 64 bit but I thought I would install the 32bit one just in case.....
Is this the version that has the single window option? If so, where do I find that?
