I have just discovered an over-sight in version 0.08 that will cause the plug-in to crash if you use the taper option on the brush tab of the dialog. if you want to use taper strokes, Version 0.09 puts that right. Apologies!

This version of the tabbed plug-in allows the user to create a preview character layer in a new image before rendering a full set of character paths.
Menu path:
Filters>>Custom Font Tools>>Custom Font Paths To Layers v0.08 Tabbed...
The new options on tab 3 of the dialog are highlighted here:

The basic idea for using the filter is to be able to apply multiple layers with a brush, or different brushes, in order to build up more complex effects.
In the past I would have just used a single character file to work on and (hopefully) remember the values used for each additional layer before applying them to the complete character set.
My typical workflow would look like this:
Set the colours/brush
Open a set of character paths in Gimp
Open the dialog and set the filter values
Set the ‘Preview single character’ option to ‘Yes’ and click ‘OK’
Appraise the effect of the values and dismiss the newly created preview image.
If unhappy with the effect, adjust the values and try again
If happy set the ‘Preview single character’ option to ‘No’
Click on ‘OK’ and add the effect to all the characters in the file.
The image below (using some old brushes) shows the results for each step when adding the preview results to the first character:
