After many tests and step by step improvements, the "little" filter is ready to be released.
Here it is:
Not to have too many topics, I'll not create a new one for the outcomes, but just update the name of the one using during the tests.
for those who do not have G'MIC 3.3, this is the version to be used

The filter makes use of "Marble" patterns we
(Issabella and myself) used in the past.
I post them here, but of course you may create and use your own.
They are in 3 zipped folders because of the attachments size limits.

Thank you for this and for the pre-release versions which sadly, I couldn't test. I have now got gimp python fully fixed, sorted out folder permissions in the folder where gmic is installed, upgraded gmic and updated its filters so now I am ready to give this one a run. Thank you again, and to Tas for his help and his appimage which made this possible for me.

I have a new update of the filter based on G'MIC 3.3
The two additional features gently provided by David are the folowing:
1- the possibility for the filter to define the color of the LIGHT RAYS when this post-processing option is chosen by the user
2- the flexibility of the filter to define the thickness of the tiles separator lines, which gives a more realistic look to the mosaic depending on the image size
I wait to post it until the presence of G'MIC 3.3 is more generalized among Gimpchat users (this update cannot run under the previous releases of G'MIC).

OK, decided to post also the version which works
only having G'MIC 3.3
for those who have already installed the new G'MIC.
Here it is
(does not replace the original one, which remains at the moment for those who did not yet install G'MIC 3.3)see post #16 for an update

Since updating G'mic to 3.3, I have downloaded your 33 version and installed it but I am still only getting rectangular tiles, no matter which figures I use.
Fri Sep 08, 2023 7:33 am
The two things new in _33 are:
1- the thickness of the tile separator lines is adjusted in the filter according to the image size: 1 pixel each 1000p of width+height (id est: 2 pixels for an image of -say- 1200*900, 3 pixels for an image of -say- 1600*1300). It was fixed to 1 previously.
2- the option Light Rays -when used- will have a color created in the filter from the mean color of the marble used (not fixed white as previously)
Tiles format is always the same

You can get more irregular tiles setting
regularity parameter to 0.
Here an example:

surely not simple "rectangles"

A little update to version _33:
added more flexibility to the tile separator lines thickness:
now it can still be calculated automatically by the filter
but also indicated by the user.
User has now the possibility to choose according to her/his taste and the image type
(for instance it could be nice to force 1 for children images)

I had been trying higher numbers on regularity. Lower numbers work - thanks.

OK.
