Post subject:  GT Bevel V1.1

I've spent a little time looking over the beveling scripts for GIMP and while there are some nice ones available, none of them exactly fit my needs. So, I thought I'd try to improve on the Add Bevel script included with GIMP.

GT Bevel is an improved version of GIMP’s Add Bevel script. The user can select the slope type, as well as height, width & light direction. When selecting “Keep Layers”, the bevel will be placed on a separate layer.

The curved slope example is basically the same kind of result you can get from GIMP's Add Bevel script, with a small width and low height.

The flat example is at full width (for that text) and with a medium height. Because this produced a darker result than I wanted, I increased the light distance (bump azimuth) to compensate. Perhaps that slider should be renamed to something more descriptive because Light Distance doesn't seem to accurately describe the affect of the slider.

Download GT Bevel From GIMP Scripts

Anyway, I would appreciate anyone who has the time to test out the script and post back their results. Comments and suggestions for improvement are welcomed. Thanks!

Here's a test I did...

Each bevel type kind of looks the same, but I only changed the light in one of them. I left the rest at default settings.
It would be nice to have the bevel produced on it own layer. So that if need be, it could be worked on or modified.

Thanks for testing, Wallace.

You won't notice a big difference in the slopes with very small bevel widths & heights, such as with the defaults. You'll see the difference when you begin to increase those values. Flat uses a linear curve in the bumpmap, so you'll see a more flat slope to the bevel, with sharper edges. The Curved slope uses a spherical curve in the bumpmap, which produces a more of a curved result. The Sinus slope, uses a sinusoidal curve in the bumpmap, which produces a somewhat of a flat slope with more curved edges.

It's a good idea to allow the placement of the bevel on a separate layer. I'll add that as an option. :bigthup

No problem, thank you. :hi5
It also seems to produce a cleaner looking bevel as well.

Here's a flat bevel made higher and wider. I used a dingbat. Very nice script, Tux. Thanks!

Thanks for testing, O. I see you were able to get some depth from that hammer ding by using a flat bevel. :2thup

Very nice script Tux. These are flat, curved and sinus.

Thank you for testing, Molly. Your results look great!

@Marcello - I've been using Ctrl-z with the script for undo during testing. Not sure why you can't. When you perform Ctrl-z, is the original layer you were on not being selected? What kind of image are you using and how are you making a selection, manually?

It's important that the script works properly with Ctrl-z. Otherwise, it's harder to try out different setting to get the result you're after.

The undo button works perfectly fine for me under edit. Just tried the ctrl+Z and it also works fine.

Thanks Tux

My second test done using a larger font size.
I notice that the Sinus and Curved bevel styles look identical even at this scale.

Maximum bevel settings for each bevel type; another easy, fast performer GT.

The 'downunder wonders" obviously like it and for Gnu Tux/Wallace, I was very tempted to put some beveled leaf shadows in there somewhere ;)

Thanks so much for the testing, Rod, OMG, Graechan and everyone else. I'm please no one has found any major problems. yet. :hehe

As far as the 3 slopes, here are some examples where the differences can be clearly seen. I'm using the exact same menu options, only changing the slopes.
