Use whatever suits.
I thought the 1 BA_Spinning_Coin_Anim.py plugin, once the 3 layers are set up, produces a reasonable result for very little effort.

Yes, I agree that the spinning coin plugin is good enough. The coin creating plugin produces errors for bump map "ambient" settings out of range, so I edited it to reflect the current Bump Map filter. It makes it usable...

Well, I can't get the spinning plugin to work. Just reading what went into it, made my head hurt. Creating the coin tutorial and then using creating a middle layer from Ella's tutorial, and the finally using the spinning coin plugin... that's a lot of work just to use one plugin.

This is what I got when I ran the plugin after using coin Brian's plugin.
Image

It still doesn't make any sense to me to do tutorials and then combine them into the project before actually using the spinning coin plugin.

Well that's different and unique, not sure how you merged those two animations. Using a mask I presume?

Indeed
Alpha to selection > Mask from selection on the other one >> done (you just need to do it on 1/3 of the frames as the two other third will just fit by putting them above or below
one animation is smaller to fit just right inside

A more crazy one (made with G'MIC) with a static in the middle :hehe

G'mic 3D extrude looks quite ok to me, except for the edge. Probably would be better looking if you made the coin edge zigzag.
Original 512x512. Used 50 frames for a smoother animation.
After G'mic-> lock alpha of all layers, LayerFX color overlay using gold color linear burn 80% opacity.

Will try out Brian's plug-in later.

Wow these coins are all great :clap

I particularly like PixLab's #25 and Nidhogg's #28 as they have great lighting and details on the coin :yes

I gave sequences gmic 3d extrusion a try too but as I don't know what I'm doing I just made a very simple image as input. What do you put in the image that you run gmic on to get the great results in #25 and #28?

@teapot When I saw that you posted in this thread, I told myself "She/He surely has posted something creative", and I was right :yes (that's a very nice effect)

The attachment coin1.gif is no longer available

I'll try to explain how I do it
(If any one reading this has a different way to do it, it would be lovely to share it :bigthup )

Once all layers are generated by G'MIC, I use them as a map.
I had one more layer for the gradient or texture just above the first one at the bottom in the layer stack and made all other layers invisible (Shift+Click on the eye you want to keep visible)
Image

Once I'm happy with the layer mode/result, I put that texture layer at the very bottom and make all layer visible

Then I run a script from saulgoode that I've "modified" (as some time I don't want merged) to duplicate the BG layer over EACH layer then merge them

the original script (in the menu Filters/Animation/Overlay background) -> http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/rep ... combine-bg
My modified version below (in the menu Layer/Multi-Layer tools/Overlay background/overlay background merged)

Chose which either script you want to install, but DO NOT put BOTH in the script folder (even with a different file name), they might/will interfere!!

Cool tossing the coin idea. I pick tails :hehe
The image I used, was from google search. It already had a small emboss effect so I used lower depth and added smoothness.
I think good depth map image would be best.

I gave a try to the script, I should never have tried G'MIC before... because I prefer G'MIC :yes

This script reduce the original coin I made by 50% or more and had no choice about it, also it is long to generate the layers. :hoh
36 layers -no choice- as they are made by 10 degree for the rotation (out of 360 degree)

This script is extremely simple to use :bigthup you just chose where it should start > Head (10) or Edge (10 phase90)

In the end this script might need an update as many things seems to not work anymore like the lighting position, secular light, and so, that we don't see in the result but I did saw all those in the source code or is it only for the edge of the coin... inside?

If you have made your texture horizontally (who did not do it the first time :rofl ) you can get an interesting effect depending the thickness of the lines, something more or less like a "moire" on the 4 - 5 layers showing the edge

You have a mirror image on the reverse side, not realistic

Use Brian script, three layers, front face, reverse face (flipped vertically and horizontally), and an edge layer.

It is precisely about the Brian's script I was speaking about... :puzzled

For the spinning coin, what is the preferred method used? I can't get Brian's script to work. (See posts #15 & #23)

This spinning coin stuff is looking really nice.
:paint
I haven't tried it out yet,
but have all the necessary files and the associated tutorial.
It's the coin's edge that I'm most interested in.

Agree, it's fun.
For the edge (I'll explain using the script) it's very easy.
A very quick method for the edge, chose a gradient Bilinear > sawthooth wave, made it outside the image, you got your edge, this layer which should be at the bottom :bigthup

The method people will like the most, some like the Brian's script for its simplicity, some prefer G'MIC for the lighting and different options, some prefer the Ella's tutorial for doing it manually (excellent tuto BTW), in the end it's the people call and what they are happy with ;)

mackenzieh wrote:

Brian's script works just fine and is very easy to use, but you do need to have 3 layers to start with or it will not work.

Top layer should be = the Front of the coin
Mid layer should be = the Back of the coin.
Bottom layer should be = the pattern for the coins outer edge

I'll try to let you grab the concept for the script to work, no fancy things, it's just to grab the concept

Create New image 500x500px
Then go to: Image >> Guide >> New guide (by Percent)... /Horizontal 50%
Go again to: Image >> Guide >> New guide (by Percent)... /but this time select Vertical 50%
Now grab the Ellipse Tool :elipse Click in the middle of your image on the crossing guide and drag out the ellipse (start to drag out and while dragging hit Ctrl+Shift to get a perfect circle starting from the center) then fill with a color
(keep the selection active, thus do not deselect yet)
Attachment:
screenshot_20211204-115409.png
screenshot_20211204-115409.png [ 47.32 KiB | Viewed 950 times ]

Then use the text tool and write "H" and merge it down by clicking on that icon (red arrow)
Attachment:
screenshot_20211204-115632.png
screenshot_20211204-115632.png [ 44.83 KiB | Viewed 950 times ]

Then in the menu: Image >> Crop to content (Very important to do it now)
Then create a new layer (selection is still active) fill with a color
Then Text tool and Write "T"
Then same as previously click on the icon to merge down
Image

Now you can deselect >> Select >> None
Put the "T" layer below the "H"

Now create a New layer and made a texture like I did just above at #39
Then Put that layer at the very bottom!
Image

Now you can start the Brian's script ;)
