Recent post reminded me of this thread. I only have a 32 bit linux plugin in my archive, so 64 bit version attached with source code.

The plugins hide / unhide do work with my kubuntu 18.04 / Gimp 2.10.22 appimage

To save wading through earlier posts, it work as:
Open png image, Have a message handy in a 'something.txt' file. Run the hide plugin using 'something.txt' input
Export the image as a 'new png' file.
On receipt: Open the 'new.png' file, run the unhide plugin. Point it to a folder and it writes a file 'output.txt'

This is only really meant as a bit of fun, there is a text file size limit and only for lossless image formats.
