I've found a way to use gradients that works so I'm happy now :yes

Since I'm not good with the color mixer in the Impact dialog, I colorized the color layer using Colorize, then did a new bright orange layer over that and set it to Burn. Got the image wide enough so that the rays didn't get clipped when making it.

However I have tried to change the gradient, but every time Gimp dies. I tried about 6 different gradients.
Gimp 2.8.4, Kubuntu 12.10, 64 bits

Any Idea?

Yup, you have the problem O and I have. gimp-2.8.4 had issues to do with the gradients and have been fixed but Linux doesn't know it yet, so it might be a while before we can get that fix.
Our Gimp crashes in several gradient based scripts with no warning, just closes.
