I've done another test because it's fun to play, this time using Colors/Stress ToneMap to create the edges layer.
Been using it with some other custom plays.
Did not do the invert & color to alpha either, simply changed the layer mode to 'darken only' after threshold.
Anyway, the outcome will be much sharper because of the settings used with Stress, and the threshold needs to be something like 230-255. Maybe a preprocess would help.

A2 plug-in, plasma disabled.



Tutorial run (the original) using Stress ToneMap.
Plasma LCh Chroma 25%. Soft Light layer to Luma/Luminance darken only 70%. The additional Grain Merge layer 15% (could be hidden entirely).

IMO Stress and C2G produce the same results, using the same parameters. Done some tests.

Issabella this morning has shown me a new ongoing tutorial.
I've examined and tried to "translate" it into a filter.
The filter WILL NOT create exactly that look, which requires manual operations; but something on the way.

Issabella will post here soon the tutorial; later on I will post my filter.

As you read in the tutorial, there is a MANUAL use of a brush to create an interesting look around the centre of the outcome.
In the filter I created (and use) a pattern to simulate a frame.

Here is the filter:

These pattern have a centre in black (which will be removed to let the centre of the outcome transpare fully visible, a white all around, which will be "colored" by the chosen paper colour.
The filter provides a set of predefinied colours and a place where the user can enter a different specific personal colour for the bg pattern.
