Now if it only had an animated shadow.

Simply add it to each layer. Here I added both lighting effect and shadow.

I made this a while ago for the same person I made the coin for.
The image below was made using Blender and it's now used as part of a video intro.
I'd like to try and replicate this type of shadow within GIMP.

[ Image ]
I gave it a try using Filters -> Light and Shadow -> Perspective with these settings:
angle 45.0
relative_distance_of_horizon 5.0
relative_length_of_shadow 0.3
blur_radius 5
opacity 50

Maybe with some experimenting this could get near to the effect you want?

I can't agree more. teapot is very creative :bigthup

@teapot, Your shadow on your last coin is excellent, well done! :coolthup
IMO you did put the Brian's script to the next level, literally! :clap and your last iteration gave me quite something to think about :rofl
Thus I have a question, below I did it with the Ofnuts' interleaves to merge the shadows, did you use it as well or is it another method?

Thank you PixLab :bigthup

I like your spinning Santa. Yes, I also used Ofnuts' ofn-interleave-layers.py to merge the shadows.

I also admire your spinning ball in post #50. Which gmic filter did you use?

We could almost have a tree decorated soon :hehe

The spinning sphere:
G'MIC > Sequences > 3D Image Object [Animated] , it will transform an image to a spinning cube, sphere, pyramid, and so, even a rubik's cube :hehe

Yes, I agree soon we might have a tree fully decorated :rofl

Just a quick try for the shadow, I did follow teapot's setting (thank you) then Ctrl+F and :alnbot(merge coin with shadow) on each layer
