I started a discussion on it back at this post. I should've probably started a new thread but I wasn't really expecting such a prodigious response. :clap

Here's a trick for non-picture backgrounds.
Open a new 400x400px image with white background and leave blank.
Render the calendar using this background.
When the calendar is complete, go into the layers dialog and turn off the background, all of the calendar text layers and the border layer. Only the calendar backgrounds should be visible.
Merge all visible layers. (If you want, you can turn this new layer off, turn on all the text layers and merge them also, which is what I did; I ended up with a border layer, a text layer, a calendar-background layer, and a page-background layer.)
Select the calendar-background layer.
Choose the Select-by color tool :colsel and click on the calendar background area.
Now you can use the Blend tool to place a gradient in the calendars, or fill with a pattern!

I would also point out that the paths for the pentagons for each of the months can be found in the Paths Dialog (along with the paths for the four tabs). One could create a selection from all of these paths (holding down SHIFT while clicking on the red Path To Selection button :select can be used to combine them).

Probably no easier than your suggestion, merely an alternative.

:coolthup I didn't know you could do that with paths. I've been merging paths to be able to do the same thing. Doing it your way, I don't have to make duplicates if I want some separate and others joined.

This is my first test (with no script). I am going to download the script and try it out!

I downloaded the latest script and when I run it, with facets enabled, I get the following error. Then if I click on any layer, after clicking ok in the error box, the image comes up beautifully. Very odd indeed.

I ran the script once and got the image, then again without the facets, to get the fold lines and filled in the tabs. This is my result, after lowering the fold layer.

My original image put together. I wasn't going to show how horribly I put it together, but this is it. And I did get my fingers taped together. I have to go through my art case for double stick mounting tape for the next one!

Oops. There should be a space between "facet-image" and "channel" (not a hyphen). I will provide an updated version tomorrow. I just upgraded my system this morning haven't yet set up the synchronicity with my Chiselapp repository.

LOL. It is still pretty Greg.
I have done 4 now and each one gets better. I tried to tape them on the inside so the tape wouldn't show, (forget that) I thought about stapling. I might go out one of these days to check out that book binding tape to see what it looks like. I am determined to do a perfect one. My last one was pretty close but I don't like the look of the tape. Also, for me the dark colors don't work cuz the black gets rubbed off some on the folds and looks icky. I did a black one with white text.

A new version of the script has been released and is ready for testing. Improvements are for the most part merely aesthetic but it required a significant amount of recoding (so there may be errors).

List of changes:
  • Month names are now normalized to all be the same size (previously months with short names such as "May" would be much larger than longer-named months such as "November").
  • A channel is created which permits easy selection of all of the facets.
  • A channel is created which permits easy selection of all of the text.
  • The default for the "Edge length" option is now "400" which should work for printing out on either normal letter size (8.5"x11") or DIN A4 sheets at a resolution of 300 DPI.
  • A new option for placing the year underneath the calendar on a facet has been added.

Here is a sampling which shows the result of the various banner layout choices:

Thanks for pointing that out. I have updated the information at http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/repository/script-fu/wiki?name=sg-platonic-calendar.

The change made was to replace "TRUE" with "sunday?" in the calls to sg-calendar-year (around lines 173 and 305 in sg-platonic-calendar.scm) as shown in the code below (if you'd rather modify your script than download the updated version):

      (set! date-layer (car (script-fu-sg-calendar month-image
                                                   month-layer
                                                   lang
                                                   month
                                                   year
                                                   sunday? ; Sunday first
                                                   letters-in-day
                                                   layout ; (0=allow 6, 1=force 6, 2=wrap to w1, 3=wrap to w5)
                                                   text-font
                                                   number-font
font-size% ; text size as % of cell size
justify? ; right justify single-digit numbers
                                                   0 ; no borders
                                                   '(0 0 0) ; border color (ignored)
                                                   gravity )))

In sg-calendar.scm it works well, but in sg-Platonic-calendar.scm unfortunately for me it's still not

Oops. I missed a spot. The version at http://chiselapp.com/user/saulgoode/repository/script-fu/wiki?name=sg-platonic-calendar should now behave.
