"Crossword Grid" (currently at version 1.02, see here) is a script designed to create patterns depicting the famous word game of the same name. It works on GIMP 2.8.0 and later, maintaining, however, backward compatibility with previous versions of GIMP (beginning from 2.6.10).

You can download the script and read the relevant documentation from the following page of the GIMP Plugin Registry:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/25531

Each pattern generated by the script stores a list of the characteristics of the depicted crossword in the relevant image comment, providing an useful summary of the settings necessary to reproduce certain or all the features of the corresponding crossword grid in a subsequent execution of the script.

It is possible to affect the random manner through which the shaded cells should be distributed within the crossword grid by means of the "Random behavior" dropdown menu, which allows you to decide whether the random seed has to be entered manually, generated automatically or retrieved from the last created pattern.

The script can also add an outer border to the entire pattern, whereas this border has a settable thickness and shares by default the same color as the cell borders. Anyway, the option called "Keep layers separate", if turned on, will allow you to later modify the grid border's color as well as that of any element of the crossword grid.

Lastly, in order to be sure to obtain a tileable and seamless pattern, notice that you should deactivate the insertion of the clue numbers and set the thickness of the grid border to 0.

Here are some examples of crossword grids generated by the script.

Whoa! That must have taken some time and effort to make the script. Well done, GinoD.

Thanks everybody for your comments. :)

As my avatar suggests, solving crossword puzzles is one of my favorite pastimes, hence I couldn't help developing a script for GIMP in homage to what is probably the most popular word game in the world.

In writing this script, I was mainly inspired by the wide variety of crossword designs that is possible to find in the specialized magazines of my country, where the puzzles are often rectangular and/or fitted with rectangular cells, and the crossword grids do not have to necessarely comply with a 180 degree rotational symmetry.
So I wanted to bring such a freedom of action in constructing crossword grids to the script as well, by endowing it with a large amount of options that control pratically every characteristic of the pattern.

Another typical aspect of most of the italian crossword grid puzzles which the script outcomes by default is the small spacing between the block edges and the cell borders, a kind of embellishment that you can still remove or adjust by means of the "Block margins" option.

The script has been updated to version 1.02 and can be downloaded from the GIMP Plugin Registry. Refer to the first post for the link and some examples of crossword grids obtained by using the script.

This latest version provides for a better management of the random way the shaded cells should be distributed in the crossword grid, thanks to a new setting in the form of a dropdown menu named "Random behavior", which offers three different options for producing the random seed identifying the pattern. While the first and third options refer to two distinct possibilities already present in the previous version (those of generating the seed automatically or specifying it explicitly), the second option adds the ability to recover and reuse the random seed associated with the most recently generated grid.

Feel free to post your comments and your personal results. :)
