Script request for scrolling text banner

A presumptuous thanks to GnuTux and Graechan.

Is it possible to create a script for "a horizontally scrolling text zone" in GIMP please.

A user defined string that would scroll Left to right, right to left at a user defined zone on the layer and located top, centered or bottom.
An input for shift rate
Ideally an option for vertical scrolling. {:)
Selectable Fonts and just for kicks, a few effects and embellishments.

It was done with PEEKS, POKES and DATA FIELDS on the coal fired PCs, but it's hard to find in modern software.

On Bended Knees: A simple task for you guys, could the very clever coders at GIMP CHAT please, please, please consider this humble challenge.

I know it can be done by shifting layers, however it is so time consuming.

If this is for a web site, it can be done with much better looks in HTML/Javascript these days.

No ofnuts, it is actually for a text scroll on an image, a little like the old raster intro (Commodore 64 and such) but that would probably do the trick. :tyspin
