Hi everybody!
In Italy we say: "chi trova un amico trova un tesoro"
How do you say this in English? Someone here will appropriately translate this sentence.
I'm not confident on Google translations for proverbial sentences.
I start with this sentence because, after the excellent experience with my previous script,
I had the pleasure to have again Issabella as partner during the preparation of this new script.

This script takes origin from the Gimp-chat topic KDE4/Aero Blur Effect.
My main and simple purpose when starting to work on this script has been:
- let the user perform his/her selection(s) (if not, a default selection is applied by the script)
- create on the remaining part of the image a glass effect, with different glass aspects
- leave selection(s) untouched, so that they look like through "holes" in the glass

I ended up with 11 different glass effects (they could have been much more, but I like some simplicity).
Some of them are -let me say- traditional glass effects:
- glass tiles
- textured glass
Other ones are more sophisticated glass effects:
- stained glass
- psychedelic glass
- polygonize
- fractalize
Another class of effects deals more with an hypothesis of painting and drawing "en plein air":
while the selection(s) represent(s) the source reality, the "glass" around represents the work-in-process
of the artist:
- coloured pencils
- etching
- charcoal
- cartoons
The remaining one is more an effect to direct the user's attention on the selection(s):
- gradient flare

The script was developed step by step, taking into account the tests and suggestions coming from Issabella.
She did half a thousand experimental tests!

Many of the effects are G'MIC functions, so they may be slow in execution if the starting image is big
and the computer has an average power.
So it is recommended to start experimenting with images not greater than 1200*800.

We provide here some examples (hardly selected from the half thousand produced by Issabella).
You may have an idea of the different effects.

Some indications, because result of the effects are tightly dependant on image characteristics, thus:
- on very dark images (or, better to say: on very dark non-selected areas) many effects do almost nothing visible
- on very much structured images (like a forest, for instance) effects like Stained Glass or similar
will create very detailed "pieces" of glass; you may like the outcome or you may not
- on images with transparent areas (even if apparently invisible like in some .png images) the bevelling
effect does not work as expected (it should result only on the selection(s) borders). This problem has been detected by Issabella during one of her many tests. If you see extraneous bevels, please
convert your image from .png to .jpg and try again.

This script make use of the script "sample_avg_colour", which therefore must be present
in one of your scripts folders accessible to Gimp.

removed

for those who don't have it already:

on the following posts, examples of use

enjoy!

edit: removed attachments, see the new release code (including sample-avg-colour function) on page 5, post #47

What I've heard most here in the USA is, One who finds a faithful friend, finds a treasure.
Pretty much the same thing.

One more. Gradient flare without a bevel.

very interesting result, the non-use of the bevel is certainly the correct choice in this case
thanks!

It's been my pleasure to collaborate in a minimal part in such an appealing project, Dinasset. I haven't stopped doing many of your effects on my own photos. They will be so nice in my next photo album! Thank you so much. :jumpclap :jumpclap :jumpclap

for the second one you can try Oregonian's technique, no-bevelling, maybe...

Just saw this. Took me awhile to realise I had to make a selection. This is my first try. I will have a look more at it tomorrow.
Thank you dinasset and Isabella

Very nice Issabella; beautiful photos. Sallyanne, that is a very interesting effect you achieved there.

The original photo here was black and white and I wanted to try a layer mode on the frame. I used red and set the layer mode to Difference.
