Hey Sallyanne, coming from an inexperienced user, I think its obviously an area of trial and error too. I have been having similar problems today getting blobs of colour not pleasant strokes and had to keep changing number of/distance between paths, brush type, size and this 'spacing' thing which I still do not comprehend very well.
However, after quite a while trying a number of different combinations I was able to get what I wanted (refer my post #158 in the path-inbetweener thread) and like Graechan advises my settings ended up right down the low end of the scale. Good luck anywway.
oldmangrumpy, spacing means the following. When you run the "stroke path" the spacing will define the distance between a stroke and the following, measured in pixel. In other words, if you choose a small spacing the rope will appear right next to each other, sometimes overlaping. If the spacing is enormous the rope will appear well spaced, with gaps between them. For better understanding, make a simple path and ask to stroke. Change the spacing gradually to observe what happens. Also change the brush to better understand. If I want the stroke to appear alongside each other, but not overlapping, I have to set the spacing depending on the size of the brush. Therefore, the ideal spacing depends on the brush and the expected goal. If I have a 1 pixel brush and I want to fill a line completely, I have to choose a spacing of 1. If the brush is a large butterfly and I want the butterfly to appear sparsely, I have to greatly increase the spacing.
