Odin,
I guess there is no safe "make seamless" function for a texture, if I recall correctly a previous discussion, here in gimp-chat (but I don't remember exactly)

Dinasset here is a quick little bit of assurance you can use when you have a non-default pattern, brush e,t,c in your Menu

;;;; define default pattern
(define default-pattern
    (let* (
          (pat FALSE)
          (default-patternId " ")
         )
    (map (lambda (x) (if (string=? x "wood-1.jpg") (set! pat TRUE))) (cadr (gimp-patterns-get-list "")))
    (cond ((= pat TRUE)
   (set! default-patternId "wood-1.jpg"))
   (else (set! default-patternId "Pine"))))
   (list default-patternId)
) ;end defaut-pattern proceedure

and in the Menu enter
SF-PATTERN "Pattern"
default-pattern

after the script has been updated by including the logic of engrave.scm (thanks to Graechan) and by setting the default pattern to "Pine" (standard in Gimp), you ONLY need to download/install the script from post #1
at that point you can
- try using defaults : output will be your image woodcarved using Pine pattern
(not particularly nice, IMO)
Then, if you like to experiment with the best patterns for the script, you can download/install all the patterns attached, i.e
a) Texture used.7z (post #5) which only has the patterns shown in the first ten examples
b) all the textures attached zipped in post #14 and #15
The other attachments are examples, you do not need to download them

Enjoy

Okay thanks dinasset! :bigthup

Dinasset the script is scaling the pattern to fit, would it be possible to have that as an option (patterns don't look good if scaled up too far, example 'gimps patterns')

This thread is becoming a techo's dream, so lets get back to image outcomes from this great script. Here are my first attempts from this morning with a couple of my own favourite textures thrown in for good measure, striped sandstone and sandstone blocks. Some rusty metal for the geisha and leather for the koala too.

Thanks Dinasset, Issabella and Graechan.

thanks, Graechan
tried, but I should have done something wrong, I get:
Refresh Scripts Warning
Error while loading C:\Users\User\.gimp-2.8\scripts\just one-DIEGO-GRAECHAN_Woodcut-Carving-Effect_1.0.scm:

Error: (C:\Users\User\.gimp-2.8\scripts\just one-DIEGO-GRAECHAN_Woodcut-Carving-Effect_1.0.scm : 529) eval: unbound variable: default-pattern

I put your routine as a separate piece of code (before or after, tried both, the engrave separated piece of code); is it wrong?
changed also the entry in the menu as indicated

yes, I had the same idea, but I wanted first have a good "make seamless" procedure, to let the user select between:
- scale pattern?
- make it seamless w/o scaling?
otherwise results can be horrible (we tried with small unscaled and not seamless patterns, indeed, but we didn't like the outcomes)

One more before I go to bed - this result surprised me; its a Japanese vase with koi on it, from Cowra Japanese Gardens and I used a cracked dry clay texture.

Image

Edit - made the vase larger.

@Dinnasett - my surprise was very pleasant of course.
@Issabella - more excellent outcomes!

I have been having more fun trying out different images with different texture backgrounds and its interesting that some work really well in combination and others do not. I tried a number of my own texture materials most of which which were OK, but some, like 'agate', I found just too colourful to work well.

Some images though just demand this treatment and below are a number of our favourite (but now passed away) Borzoi against a variety of textures - love them all but the leather is the best I think.

very nice Grumpy!
I suppone that when you perform your tests you not only change the textures (patterns) but also the texture (pattern) type.
Here some hints:
a) if you like NOT to have the xylographic effect choose a texture type different from "Wood"
b) if you like to have shining and less contrasted effect choose "Plain metal" as texture type
enjoy

another hint:
c) if you want to get less colourful results, uncheck "do flatten" and on the resulting multilayers xcf image go to the middle texture layer (the one which has as layer mode "color") and set visibility off (there are also other easy modifications you may apply to single layers in order to get the outcome you better like, usually setting on/off visibility, changing the mode, changing transparency amount...)

@Dinasett - WOW a new word for me 'xylographic'! Yes I do change the pattern types, for example I still use brick, when I use a sandstone or cracked clay pattern, but I use wood when I use a cork pattern. I always uncheck 'flatten' anyway so I can try different approaches, but thanks for the extra hint, I will now play with that too.

Well Issabella, it looks like it is just a couple of us having fun with Dinassett's great script right now - maybe there is something else happening at this time of year!!

But I cannot resist this next couple of example outcomes and will post some more later of a wedge tailed eagle.

I was having a few file problems but all solved now - Dinasset you can see I really do appreciate your script ... I have not done a BRL image for a few days now!!

The Australian Aquila Audax (wedge tailed eagle) is a magnificent, large and much photographed bird. Your script outcomes really do it justice too ... even one I attempted using a cork background.
