I saw a lot of interest for the Galaxy script
there is also this cool set of Astronomy plugin http://www.hennigbuam.de/georg/gimp.html and http://registry.gimp.org/node/2352

Note that the most interesting from a artistic point of view are at the and of the list:
Quote:
"Artificial stars

Creates an artificial star distribution.
The interface is splitted: On the right side, you can set up the options for the star distribution, on the right side how they will be drawn. To actually calculate a star distribution, you need to click on the button, as recalculation might take very long for many stars.
Changes on the left side only affect the preview.
The sample distribution buttons give you an idea, what you can do with this plug-in.

Artificial galaxies

Creates an artificial galaxy.
Quite difficult to implement, only elliptical galaxies by now.

a tip , you may create different objects or starfield on different layers
as example one with stars one with a galaxy and then merge in lighten only mode

There are two other virtually unused planet options. One I used so long ago, I forgot all about it, and then I found an additional upgraded version of the same plug-in. The first is in GIMP via File - Create - Patterns - Land, which you then take the land pattern and run it through Map Object via sphere settings.

The second is one hidden in the depths of Gimp Talk and requires copying and pasting into an editor and saving to scripts. The script does everything the first option above offers, but then allows you to run map object directly from the script. Script can be found here:

http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/how-to-ca ... 12001.html

Then I thought, hmmm, Gimp Talk is down 99% of the time, so I zipped my copy and attached at the bottom.

Here is a render of a new earth and it's moon:

Yes, that script still works. I used it to make the above image.

Also, PC, I used that star scape script in the same image above.
