This python plugin is a result of an attempt to create a non-bugged version of a way to simulate color-blind vision in GIMP (and save the resulting images) that turned into a bit of a research project and ended up having a lot more options than originally expected.

Since it didn't make it to gimpscripts and the gimp plugin registry seems to be abandoned (and impossible to register on), I suppose I will just publish it here for those who might be interested.

The plugin simulates both dichromacy and anomalous trichromacy (using the Brettel algorithm for the former and the physiologically based model originally implemented in another plugin you can find at gimp plugin registry for the latter with some extensions). It's slow but there is a parallel version available to speed things up on modern systems. It's the only software I know that attempts to simulate color blindness in Adobe RGB (as well as properly calibrated sRGB) color space.

The latest version is available on the github repository (you may search for gimp-dichromacy if you are interested, the forum doesn't allow linking to new users) and the current snapshot is provided in the attachment.

Well, the usefulness of this plugin is questionable anyway - it was developed out of curiosity and interest in alternative color perception more than anything else. If you are an anomalous trichromat, it could still be useful for that purpose. It could probably also be used by people with full color perception to make dichromat-friendly designs.

tnphis: a very interesting filter! i don't know if i would ever have any direct use for it, but if i can only get it to work on this antiquated laptop i will definitely run it just to experience pictures in a new way! thanks for sharing.

Well, it shouldn't require anything more than a GIMP 2.8.14 installation with the python-fu option but it would be slow for larger images.

Alternatively, you can use an online service provided by vischeck. They shrink images and their calibration is slightly off but it should be sufficient just to get the idea.
