You can construct geometric shapes by putting together strokes obtained individually:

However this may not be sufficient if you want a selection, because Gimp will compute a selection for each stroke:

Today's script will solve this problem, by splicing together into one single continuous stroke the strokes that have end points sufficiently close to each other (by about 0.1 pixel). Available at the usual place.

Enjoy.

Will it splice individual path layers that are stroked?
I created two path layers. One i rotated and placed the very end of the path near the other path. I then stroked one red and the other blue. I ran the plug-in Tools>Splice Strokes. I got a new layer with only the top path on it. Should i keep all the stroked paths on the same path layer then?

You can merge two or more individual paths into one multi-stroke path using "Merge Visible Paths" in the Paths context menu (after making the paths visible, of course).

As SaulGoode says, you just merge the individual paths into one single path before calling the script. Given enough bribery, I can be enticed to have a mode where the strokes from all the visible paths are spliced.

See version 0.1 on Sourceforge. This has become pretty close to a "Merge visible paths intelligently".
