For the script to run correctly you need the Seamless-burger image below and the required mask pattern which is attached at the bottom of this post.. Just download and place them in your "patterns" folder and refresh patterns or restart GIMP.
Menu location for this filter is Rod>Alpha to Logo>Chewed Text Effect
Image

USE - First download the SCM file and place in your gimp-2.8/scripts folder. Refresh scripts (Filters>Script-Fu>Refresh Scripts) OR restart GIMP.
1) Create a new image with ONLY a text layer or a layer with shapes on a transparent layer.
2) Select the text layer and run the script - Rod>Alpha to Logo>Chewed Text Effect
MOST important you have to use a transparent pattern or image with transparency for the Mask Pattern!
ALSO just making the bg layer invisible will not work either. The script relies on adding a certain amount of layers and moving them to their correct positions in the tree. A single text layer works best.

The widget (filter dialog) has a few settings
Background color - select your bg color
Shadow Color - select your shadow color
Pattern - pattern fill
Mask Pattern - cutout pattern for effect (must have transparency)
Bevel Size - chunk bevel
Chewyness - select direction and amount of offset for cutting mask (this creates the broken up look of the effect) Go sparingly on this slider unless your text is HUGE! 3-4 plus or minus is usually good enough.

You MUST select a mask with some transparency it or will not work correctly. Latest version attached.

I like this other new script, Rod. Great! I find it innovative as it plays very good with the shadow chosen. :bigthup
Thank you. :)

One of my favorite patterns for this filter is the 3 point tile pattern.

That's really nice, Rod. Can't play with it now as getting ready for Holiday family company this week and next. Then I'll have time.

Using pan to bow (180) and then the script using the startile pattern. I also fixed some things in the code.
The chewiness slider didn't seem to work correctly. It now does.

Remember you have to create a text layer first before you run the filter. New update is attached in first post.
Version 1.4

The next adjustment will be to allow the user to select their own cutout mask. :)

You can get some pretty neat results with your own pattern masks. Here i used a steel mesh for the mask and snakeskin for the pattern.

One more. Both pattern and mask are mesh screens.

Getting this error, Rod. Not sure why. Also, when I ignore it, the Script-fu crashes (new version; haven't tried your original yet). :)
