...imagining that the author instead of a "fresco" did a mosaic....

Rod just posted the official update.
You may download from there the update which:
- you find as "Update Of Mosaic Lyle Style" below the original entry
- it replaces the original one, but once installed in the description it will show up as 1.1
Soon I will remove from this thread the temporary "Special Edition" posted.

In fact, that filter is a "helper".

I understand that it's a "helper". I just don't get why it's there if plugins already do the actual work. I don't see the point of the the tile helper, that's all.

Beautiful mosaics, Pat and Dinasset. I love them and the soft bright on the little mosaic tiles. :clap
My first result using version 1-1 :)

Not to invent the wheel again. Consider it like a "sub-assembly", like a battery for a car producer.
That .scm performs an interesting function which is useful as a preprocessing step.
What you say can be applied to ANY existing filter either in Gimp or in G'mic: why to use the "blur" function of gimp? a coder can do it by himself, managing each pixel. Why to use G'MIC isophotes? a (good) coder can do it by himself .... and so on.
Why a cook makes use of butter instead of doing it by himself starting from the milk?
The world (including the world of coders) is made not only of totally self-standing finished products, but also by "helpers", which just perform well specific functions. RobA scm is excellent in performing what is needed at a certain step in the overall process; it is released stand-alone because it can be "called" when needed by other filters (or used directly by a Gimp user who likes to implement manually -for instance- the tutorial of Lyle).
Hope to have cleared the point, if not ask some other coder, who may better explain the process.

Thank you so much Dalia and Dinasset. I enjoy this filter a lot and I place some of my photos under this filter and others in my family photo album. I have a good collection in them. :) :bigthup

I am envious of the results achieved in this thread, particularly as I have tried the filter many times but cannot obtain a result that I like. Obviously my inability to choose the 'right' photo to fit the filter best is the problem, given the outcome others have achieved.

But I will keep trying, so here are a couple of passable results from our Japan trip; the hotel entrance and Hiroshima Peace Park original target dome through the peace arch -

oldmangrumpy, I think your results are beautiful.

Did another, did not like the final outcome - I "undid" the last action which was scale and liked the result.

Everyone is doing such a beautiful job! Thank you, Dinasset, for all your hard work on this filter! And to Lyle, who started the "Mosaic Movement".

Dalia, your Mary Magdalene is wonderful.
OMG, you may start from thinking at ancient roman mosaics: what they did use as subject is very likely suitable for the filter (as well as classical portraits, of course).
