Thank you all for your comments.
No Pat, I'm not so patient as Animicule is. I simply ran the filter in wood patterns with 20 colours. :)

Pat625 - if you run the plugin on your outcome (instead of the original a couple times (with the 2 gmic settings on the 1st one each) and play with the layer modes and positions, it will either bring out the color nicely or go way out there (there is a good reason for the delete button).

Here is one with lots of patterns. Peacock tail feathers, hummingbird wing, coral, mother of pearls, rabbit fur, pearl gradients converted to patterns and a wood or two.

I am still learning how to set up the colors for the best outcome. Here is my latest attempt.

Nice one Pat625! Is that woods, leather and crinkly paper?
My try today was a gradient pattern as the subject, and
a single large tree stump as the only pattern. Then removed
the bottom "third" and added some parts of old outcomes
for some interest.

Issabella, it is not really patience, I only use a very small area of operations
with gimp and only do one two things each day, while you are doing many
varied things and becoming expert in them.
I would like to try your dragon to add shell, coral and lava and make a cousin
for it, if you would not mind. Please let me know!

Dinasset: I took your suggestion and only used one pattern. What do you think?

Pat, I like it a lot. I think that using an only pattern is a very nice option. :bigthup :hi5

Yes, Pat, I agree with Issabella: result is good and has a different feeling with respect to those composed by many patterns; it's really another chance available.
Both options can be experimented with success.

another possibility is this:
- choose a pattern you like
- reproduce it in more than one luminosity (i.e. copy, change brightness, save with a suffix)
- use that base name as filter: e.g. assuming you have a pattern called wood10, create also a wood10light, a wood10mid, a wood10dark and use as filter wood10
- the filter will find and use 4 patterns, according to the luma value

here an example

used 4 different lumas of the same pattern

Very nice results everyone!
Dinasset's amazing filter on a photo of the famous Fly Geyser (Nevada, USA).
Just one pattern from a dark stone mountainside scaled to fill entire area.

Beautiful work and I direct it towards everyone: Issabella, animicule, dinasset!

Pat, I agree with you - I too like to use a minimum of patterns. Your ram and other submissions are beautiful! :clap
