Ok, so I tried to compile bascii pre alpha, doing so successfully, but there are no instructions anywhere I can find, on how to run it. It isn't registered in the GIMP menus as far as the c file shows. The sourceforge site is like bare bones. It's not critical, but apparently the author thought we were all mindreaders. Joy!

Anyhow, I know GIMP converts files to ascii via saving files to txt. The bigger question is, why doesn't GIMP allow for you to view your ascii/text file afterwards? This seems rather odd. Sure, when I open the txt file in an editor I get a very large page which my screen won't allow me to see in full. Surely there is a better way and I am just not aware of it?

I thought I was being savvy, by copying the text file and pasting it as a new image into gimp, and all that does is gives you a transparent image with the text image area in a solid white color. I was expecting to see black text on white background. Any information appreciated. :)

You will find it in save as dialog Mahvin - although every time i try to use it it kills the plug-in.

Basically you just open an image and save it as BACSII - a dialog pops up asking which font and some other stuff, then you click okay and hope it works... :lol

Be nice if you could get it to work and tell me how you did it. :)

I just use ASCIIGen. It's now open source too (though it's now a .NET program; still have his original non-.NET program, but the .NET version is much better). :)

I get the menu, Rod. It's just after I make the selection and press OK, I get the error about file-bascii-save.

Searching under ASCIIGen results in all kinds of sites, none of which have open source files. One sourceforge site for ASCIIGen was blank.

Check out this weird but sort of cool result when I paste a text copy (picture of me as a txt file) into a blank white background image in GIMP. It's sort of cool and easy, but in its natural form, the layer is actually a solid white image.

Unfortunately it can't be compiled in Linux, or even used with mono.

Always used copy/paste if I did any GIMPy things with it, but I've not tried to Shellout yet. Just noticed they had updated it since I last installed it back in Dec. 2009 (only a few weeks after I upgraded to Win7). Might download and try the current version later. The one in 2009 still works fine though. :)

edit: misspoke; the website updated. I still have the current version. lol

:)

Man; if I had the ability to give Rob some serious dough, I would. Shellout really puts GIMP on steroids. Be cool if someone attempts to Shellout to PS (I won't though; lol). :)

You just have to go through all the saves in ASCII and then save it in the location of the ShelloutTemp file in
C:\Documents and Settings\user\local settings\temp

I have and it does work LOL
but it takes mine too long to load so i use XnView instead or Paint Dot Net now that i know it can run 8bf filters.
I wish i could figure out how to shellout to Filter Forge - then i think i would just need it. :)
Tried everything i know though, even moving dll files about... no go.
But believe it or not Paint Dot Net runs Filter Forge :lol ... go figure
