I have added a new set of text effects to the TextFX filter.
Metallic Texts:
Open dialog from Filters>TextFx>Metallic Texts
Translucent Texts:
I have updated the translucent texts dialog to add consistency to both sets of filters and added a new roundedness feature to both.

You will need to use of one of the tools that let you access long dialogs in Gimp. Really good suggestions for these can be found here in this topic...
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=14502&start=0

Both sets of effects benefit from the use of big, bold fonts when creating captions. I have deliberately only used the plugins that come with Gimp2.8 within the filters.
The dialogs (new features highlighted) can be viewed below:

The Metallic Text effects example...

To Rod and Dinnaset:
Sorry about the missing zip! Think I've fixed it.
Senior moment - completely befuddled by it.

vertical positioning does not work, text is positioned at the bottom
could you double-check?

Rod, open an image, then run the filter (adjusting character size likely) and try to position a title
in my tests it is always positioned at the bottom

I think those filters need additional tests, Skinny

Irony in that I can't use this filter since it calls on a py plugin that causes other problems with other filters in GIMP.

You can of course use the text position from left/bottom to position the text
There does seem to be a bug applying a translucent effect more than once, in that it picks up the previous application position
Leaves selection entries in channels, that might be the problem. Probably a rare occasion where the plugin is called more than once. Easily fixed by merging layers.

examples.

Hi Rod and Dinasset:

Here's what I get using metallic filter with text justification set to top right:
Attachment:
BlueSuede with metals at 25 percent top right.jpg

and using translucent filter set to plastic film with centred justification...

Have you set the 'Allow Caption Justification' to 'Yes'?

Mahvin:

Please could you tell me which of the py plugins causes a conflict so that I could try a fix and yes I I do need to clean out the channels. Easily fixable though.

OK, Skinny, with Caption Justification works correctly.
In my versions I will change the default to Yes, it seems more reasonable
